In New York
I am in New York today. Cortland to be specific. I've taken pics but I'm too tired to upload them now. I may post them tomorrow. I'm uploading a video and hope it won't take long. So left Virginia and had another scary and long drive. Though it wasn't that far the speeds were slow which made this a 5 hour drive. Had a scary thing happen with another driver but luckily I was in control of the situation and did the right thing and didn't panic. And then it was back in the mountains and I sort of got to do that scary driving I was afraid of. Driving by cliffs on one side and on the other side falling rocks. No rocks fell while I was driving but there were signs about falling rocks and I saw rocks near the road that had fallen so I kept an eye on the cliff walls when I went under them. I do not like driving in the mountains.

I finally made it to Cortland and I don't like this hotel. Worst one so far. After being spoiled at the Aloft this place sucks. The staff is friendly and nice but the biggest complaint is the gross smoke smell. It was in the halls and in the rooms. They moved me to another room which was slightly better but the building needs to be rebuilt. It's in the walls. Also I saw many employees smoking on the property and it's supposed to be all non smoking. Why are there even ash trays by the door ways? The pool is closed not that I would use it anyway but that was a sign things aren't good. Also the fire alarm is not working which makes me think it's been sabotaged so they can get away with smoking. So despite great customer service that's not enough to make up for poisoned air and furniture. I'm leaving all my stuff closed as I don't need all my clothes for the trip ruined. I purposely left Fear in the car so he won't get messed up. The other good hotels are booked which surprised me because WTF is there to do in Cortland? There's nothing and no one here. THe parking lots were not full so it's not like they would be booked. I don't know but I hope on the way home to get the Hampton which is next door. The shower was great though. Nice and hot and good high pressure. It helped me unwind.

The one thing cool about this place is there is a river. Not a creek a real river. There are so many birds and lovely plants here. I really enjoyed walking around. One funny thing that happened was I was watching a part that was fast. There were two bushes beside me so I could not see to my peripheral. Suddenly a kayaker went by real fast and yelled "WHOA!" Then he was gone. It was so funny and I didn't know he was there. I didn't know this river could be kayaked. Well hope he didn't crash. I'll be sure to explore this more on the return trip. Here's one of the videos I took.

So tomorrow I cross into Canada. I'm a bit nervous about it. Not sure I can get Oggdenburg to show up on my GPS. I got the Canada map for my Garmin. I hope it works out and that crossing the border won't be hard. I have my passport and my papers for my car and all I could need. I'm throwing away all food tonight to be safe.

I used to worry about going around mountains in the car as well when I first experienced going around them. Too bad the hotel had problems such as the smoke smell, yet that river was quite nice from what I saw in the video with the ducks, interesting that it could also be kayaked. Have a nice safe trip to Canada.

Everything is flat in Florida. I'm not used to mountains. Yes I can't wait to get out of here. Will be leaving soon. I hope all will go well.

Glad you got to New York safely. That river on the video looks nice. Too bad the hotel was all smoky. I hate cigarette smoke too.

I wouldn't be surprised if the only reason there are hotels in Cortland is for people on long road trips to have a place to stop and rest.

Yes. I'm glad to be out of there. Now I have arrived in Ottawa but wow I'm beat and don't feel like going out again. Need another shower from the stinky room last night.

Yeah probably. It's a do nothing town. An extra hour gets you to Syracuse but that's a big city.

I am kind of happy that over here the roads are often secured around mountainy areas via large, metallics nets, or by changing the surroundings of roads to reduce the danger somewhat. It is something to be afraid of, as it can happen any time and if it hits, it is quite likely to end someone or something.

And boy, I had that once with a smoke smell. I hate the scent of cigarettes, so much that whenever someone smokes in an area where it is prohibited (which happens a lot here in Germany, since people smoke at train and bus stations, where it is in fact not allowed) I am very tempted to tell them to put that thing out. In a more agressive manner, naturally. And generally, I think you might be right, that the people there bypassed the non-smoking sign a lot.*sigh*
Hopefully you get a better place next time, because that most certainly is below any bearable standard. At least the river does look nice and untainted.

And well, I hope Canada is nice. Having been there only shortly, I found it to be really lovely. And well, unlike Mexico, I had nobody offering me cocain when I went to the restroom.

I think they do that out west too. They should do it here in the east too. I don't know why they don't. It was a bit scary.

I'm glad you loath smoking as much as I do. I too want to tell them to cut that out. This was bad because usually it's guests that break the rules but these were the employees. They're supposed to set a good example. The river was so nice. That was the best part.

I am here now. I am very tired. Crazy rush hour traffic. I can't make a left out of my hotel and a right is very hard too as it's a constant slow flow. So now I know to avoid that time. I am learning the roads here. I may have to reverse the schedule since looks like today will rain or just be crummy.

Five hours is far too long for me. I think your trip planner didn't do a good job, either with the length of time driving or the hotel choosing. I would have suffered in that hotel. And yet, what can you do? You're sort of held hostage, aren't you?

At least the river was nice. What was that large-leaved plant? I loved the ducks :)

Oh yeah, and driving those roads is never very fun. I have one here. One day a rock did fall down. Luckily I was hanging back from the car in front, or it would have gone straight in my windscreen. As it was, it broke on impact and I couldn't stop in time, but had to drive around the pieces.

I did not like that hotel at all. But yes I was stuck as I had nowhere to go with all others being booked.

I'm not sure. I don't know the plants in this habitat but they were so pretty.

Oh gosh glad nothing happened. That's pretty scary to see a rock fall.

I don't blame you. Neither would I.

Ah, okay.

Yeah, that was too close for my liking! (And this was after they shored up the slope. This rock broke from the top!

I love mountains and i miss them very much since i visited them when i was very little, no wait last time was this year in Spain since i visisted a Natural Park that was actually a mountainscape arhhhg my memory XD. Here evrything is flat XD but i love hills and sea too (mountains have a special effect on me). The video was very lovely, i enjoyed it and ducks made my heart melt down *_* their call and calm had a really calming effect on me.

I don't like smoke smell, and i completely feel you. I don't want to breath it in....

Have a great trip in Canada!

Thanks. I'm glad you liked it. It was so lucky the ducks happened to fly by at that time then they floated down the river.

I hate it too. I wish people didn't smoke. It's so gross and bad for everyone.

Thanks. I am in Canada now and having a great time. But I'm always tired.
