Innocence Lost Chapter 4

Chapter 4

The weekend had finally arrived. Tim was over at Cope's house helping him prepare for the science fair. The two worked away in the backyard, and the ground was littered with all kinds of mechanical parts. Empty yellow aluminum can of Amperage Soda lay everywhere. They were both caffeinated up to get their mental juices flowing.
"I still think it would have been easier had you done your project on electricity, like you had first mentioned." Complained Timmy.
"Easy doesn't ge-get me first pp-place-ace. Let's test the alignment now."
"Cope, tell me; what application does a cantaloupe launcher have?"
Cope looked up from his calculations perplexed. "I don't know, but I bet we can make these babies fly at least th-tht-three blocks. Not only that but it's a really sweet cannon."
Convinced that was a good enough answer as any, Timmy tilted the launcher on its axis. If it really worked he wanted to be one of the first to see it.
“How do you come up with these crazy ideas?” Tim asked as he turned a nut with his wrench. Cope paused a moment and though.
“I d-don’t know. Sometime I have th-these weird dreams. I see-ee ideas, machines and strange rooms. It all ll-looks so strange, but w-when I wake up I want to b-build what I saw and s-sometimes it works.”
"Wow, that’s really neat. I think we're ready!" Said Tim fairly excited.
"Great! Our first te-te-test run." Added Cope. "Hand me a cantaloupe."
Tim did so and watched as Cope lifted it up and slid it into the barrel. They heard it roll down to the end, a perfect fit. Together they aimed the cannon up at an arbitrary patch of sky. The whole thing ran on hydraulics so there was no need to worry about explosive devices. It was hydraulics and pressure that would rocket him to first prize, or so Cope hoped.
"Alright." He said. "Ready. Aim. FIRE!"
"YES!" The two boys cheered. Their hearts soared with the flying fruit and they watched it turn into a dot on the horizon as it went further away. It cleared three blocks easily and then began its decent. Shortly after it fell behind the roof of a house the two heard a loud CRASH!!!!
They looked at each other, horror in their faces.
"I'd say that sounded like a ca-ca-car getting smashed." Said Cope nervously.
"Car. Definitely." Added Tim. There was what seemed to be a long silent pause then,
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!" yelled the two simultaneously. Tim began to run around in circles. Cope grabbed his cannon and threw it into the garage, destroying it in the process. He ran back to the yard, grabbed Tim, who was still running in circles, by the arm and pulled him upstairs to his room. There the two sat in silence and terror at the foot of Cope's bed. What seemed like an eternity finally passed when Cope's father came into the room.
"Hey fellows." He said. "What are you guys doing cooped up in here on a nice day like today."
"We're uh…" said Tim struggling for an idea.
"We're…doing a round robin story." Said Cope at the spur of the moment.
"Stories huh?" Said his dad. "That sounds like fun. Say son, have you finally decided what to do for you science fair project? I just got this flyer for it in the mail." Said Henry as he held up a blue piece of paper. The boys looked at each other with blank faces.
"Yes. I think I'll do it on el-el-electricity."

They must have broken some car's windshield, and their canaloupe also went splat at the same time.

Yes definitely. Now they are scared to death and sorry.

Hmm, the storm grows more intense outside. Good thing the place is warm and cozy. And that I was at the supermarket for some nice stuff.

Well, it is a bit short here, but still quite nice. Mainly, because it shows... better to be safe than sorry. A wildly flying projectile can be very dangerous and it probably really might at least destroyed something. So, I guess it will be going a bit safer with the next project. Learning from mistakes, that's how it goes.

This is probably the shortest chapter in the story but one of my faves because it's so funny. Cope shows the potential to create weapons of mass destruction though it is not his intent at the moment. It's also one of those cases where you do something bad unintentionally and feel horrible about it. So bad that no punishment could be worse but you don't want anyone to find out. But lucky for them they never did. Had they it would have been a case where Cope would have done anything to make up for it like mow lawns all summer for free.

Accidentially becoming dangerous. That would explain why an intentional creation of his quite an effective gun. Well, we go to that point soon enough. For now we can be glad that Cope got out of this easy. And look forward to some competition between him and Owen.

I thought a cantelope might be a bit big!

That was funny how Cope and Tim were scared :)

Yes it was. They are good kids and didn't mean to destroy anything so they were very scared.

I know they are good kids in your story and I was glad that they didn't get found out. Their fear was palpable!
