Summer's Rain
Ok, now for a real post. Here's some art because I "Can't draw" right? Heh hehe.
Seriously I'm very pleased with this except for the waves. They're the best I could do. Wish they were better but gah!! I actually do suck at angry storm waves. Other than that, I'm thrilled with my clouds, rain, lightning and my two characters. I'm open to any advice anyone has on how to make the water better. Gosh, I think I hate water now more than plants as far as art goes.

Pic re-worked. See new post.

At full view you can see all the little details like the rain running down them. So the story starts with This older pic as Owen's thrown overboard for running his mouth and just being a jerk. Ophidius happened to have been on the ship at the time. He was actually looking for Owen. He knew that he had become a gifted and that Thagirion wanted him dead. Those were two good reasons to keep him alive and befriend him. So he casually leaps overboard too, takes the form of Quetzalcoatl and pulls Owen out of the ocean. Next move is to find land. Flying through the storm is not easy. Quetz isn't designed for it or long distance flying. He has the rounded wings of a forest bird. He'll do his best as he makes his way towards Iceland.

I wonder if you could use the same brush for the waves as you did for the sky, but instead of the relatively straight lines you used for the sky, you could use wave patterns, even with it being stormy, water is still a soft surface, and other than breakers, there shouldn't really be any white on the water because there isn't a bright sun or moon to shine on it, and there isn't anything in the picture for the water to break over. I may see if I can find stormy water photos. The only hard line on the water is the horizon.

I love the sky. And Quetz.

Edit: I looked at some pictures, and some of them did have white highlights on each wave, but the best one didn't. It's also the hardest one for me to describe how it looks.

There are some great angry waves at night in the movie Master and Commander. Also in the naval battles of the game Assassin's Creed 4. The surfaces are dark water and yes there is white foam as they roll over themselves. I put that lightning so there would be a light sources because like you said there is no moon or sun. I did use the same brush as the clouds and the same curly technique. I will keep messing with this as now I want to draw a pirate ship in a storm. Why do I do this to myself. There must be something I'm missing in the brush strokes.

Thanks, I'm glad you like how Quetz turned out. He's so pretty. You can put the link to the pic here.

Waves are difficult to get right, I never realized how difficult till now lol.

I had no idea. I went thinking that the background would be so easy after the aggravation of the scales. I was very surprised. I will have to keep practicing though. I'd love to learn to get it right and redo this and also start drawing pirate ships.

Thank you. He's the light in the storm.

I saw your posts concerning the problems with the waves and so on but I did not have time to write down something useful (such things can't be rushed else they are not helping).
The characters turned out nice, especially the wings. The rain looks good also. I don't know if you still want to hear any crits for the background anymore now that you have finished it. Did you work with a mouse there or did you use a tablet?

I would never rush you. I am very patient and when I have emailed you for tips I do not email you again because I know you're busy with more important things. The only time I'd email you again would be if I figure it out on my own then it would be to tell you to not worry about it.

Yes, please I am always open to your crits. I always keep my PSD files and would love to fix this bad water. I use both mouse and tablet. I used the tablet on the water.
