Happy Easter and new pigeon
I have had a great day today. Chris was on call, but didn't get any calls. I'm glad it worked out that way because to me Easter and Christmas are the most important days to get off. MUST have them off no matter what. Like I have been saying I have not felt in the Easter spirit all month. For one it's in the wrong month. Then I got all those health problems a while back and missed out on the decorating that always helps me get in the spirit. But I felt great today. I had energy and could walk longer. Chris helped me water the last of the nepenthes for the week. There weren't that many left to go. It's been a full and fun day. We went to Walgreens and got some needed supplies. We cleaned the chicken coop which I have been needing help on for a while. I got some pics of my chickens because I wanted to make another Easter post on Tumblr. Check out how stylish Raptor is.

80's Wave

Ever since she was a chick her nickname was 80's Wave because her feathers part in a strange wave that looks like 80's big hair. Here she is when she was about 2 days old. You can see how her hair went up in the neck when everything else went down. Then it parted on her right also so had this cool WAVE in her hair. She kept that as an adult. So in the pic above she's shaking it and looking pretty.

Waiting for the nest

Gamma waits for Mocha to get off the nest. Notice the eggs piled on the left. Those are blue eggs btw, not white. The camera ate the color.

Get in line

Zucca also gets in line.

A mourning dove got caught in our old aviary. I rescued it and held him. He 's so fat and well fed. He's been eating the chicken food out of the bowl. Yes this is a male because he's so colorful an big. He wasn't afraid and fighting me the whole time. That's how I like my wild birds. No fear.

IMG_4173

See the blue on his head? Male in breeding colors. For a brown dove this is very colorful.

IMG_4174

Wanted to get a pic of the shape of his wings. Dove and pigeon wings are my second favorite wing shape. My first favorite wings are crow and raven wings. I love those big broad wings with finger like primaries.

These kind of pigeon wings are a good all purpose wing.

Who's that pigeon?

Who's that pigeon? I saw this baby pigeon sitting on top of the loft today as we cleaned out the chicken coop. I had my typical reaction when I find strange birds in my flocks of, "You're not one of mine!" I said that out loud. I have no idea where this pigeon came from. I have had the door open to the pigeon loft for like 4 days or so now. I have been bad and not closed it so they've been free flying 100% of the time. And since I haven't been well Chris has been taking care of them. I haven't gone out there to look at them. But I always tell him to collect the eggs because I don't want babies being born. I can't be hand feeding right now and we've never had parent raised birds because they always get killed. Hence why I have to hand feed them. Because all the nests are on the ground, once the babies are old enough to walk, they walk off and the other pigeons kill them. A baby pigeon on the ground means it fell out of the nest because it was weak so the flock's instinct is to kill the weak though that's not the case in my loft. Anyway, I think we would have noticed a big baby walking around. There's no way we could have missed that. So he can't be one of my birds. I'm guessing the joined the flock when he saw them and lost his flock. But he looks like Torque and seems to hang around Torque. Torque can't be the dad. I really don't know were this bird came from. It's a mystery.

New Easter pigeon

Here he is on the ground. He couldn't figure out how to get into the loft and was just sitting on it. One of my male pigeons didn't like him and kept scaring him away.

Flying over our house

I don't know how people get those amazing flying/action shots of birds. Even if I had a giant camera I don't think I could do it. These are some of my pigeons flying circles around my house. Even though I know where they will fly because they have a pattern I can't get good pics. My camera is getting old too and not what it used to be.

Torque and new pigeon

The pigeon on the right is Torque and he's about to land on my roof. The pigeon on the left is the new baby following Torque.

Low flying pigeon

One of my pigeons flying through the back neighborhood.

Opening bical pitcher

An N. bicalcarata pitcher opening. You can see the fangs folded up inside.

Nepenthes hanging around

I put the nepenthes back outside today. Chris helped me hang more of those white hooks. He added 4 more. The rest we've had up for a while now. I hope the cold is gone for good. The weather today was excellent. My neps don't have pitchers because of the winter. I can't wait for them to have pitchers again and not have to bring them all inside again. There are still more I need to put outside but not til I know for sure. These are the highlanders or intermediates that can take the colder nights. My lowlanders are all still inside. That big one on the right is my N ventrata that I chopped into pieces to make cuttings out of. It's already growing back as huge as ever. Crazy!

After resting a while Chris took me out again. We went to Wal-mart which I was surprised was opened. We needed parrot food. Then we went to IHOP and had a nice dinner. We came home and watched The Easter Bunny is Coming to Town. We watch that movie every Easter. It is my favorite Easter movie and made such an impact on my early childhood. I will never get sick of it and watch it every year of my life. The music in it is great too. I made a soundtrack of the songs back in 2008. Today I gave a copy to Chris and I didn't know that the song the train sings got messed up. I recorded it as stereo mix and one of my budgie sound effects went off on my computer. I've listed to that since then on my computer and never thought anything abut it because I thought it was my computer opening stuff. But when I heard it on Chris's we both knew something was wrong. OH NO, my soundtrack is messed up. I need to get that song again, but I don't know how now since I can't do stereo mix anymore. That will always bug me now.

BTW, Silvolf, thanks for the "likes" on my recent tumblr posts. I only have a handful of watchers so I appreciate that.

OH, one more thing about that baby pigeon. I put food on the landing board an finally got him to land on it. Then he did go through the bobs. I ran outside and closed the landing board. GOTCHA! Welcome to the family! He's mine now.

Happy Easter Everyone!

Hehe Raptor's feathers are cool. I like when animals and birds have unique features like that. Congrats on the new baby pigeon too!
You're welcome for the likes. I was on Tumblr last night and came across a couple of your posts. I commented on one.

She's my neatest looking chicken, because she doesn't look like a chicken sometimes.
Thanks. I need to check and make sure he's not getting beat up now that he's contained.
Yes, I saw the comment and it made me very happy. I wish I could have responded back. I'm glad people can comment at least through the dashboard. You can always click my icon if you want to see if you missed anything. Tumblr puts the most recent activity in your follow list in order which I thought was interesting.

Raptor is a cute chicken.

Mourning Doves are funny. They look so slow and clumsy on the ground, but they fly so fast. Same with pigeons.

Your new pigeon has pretty wing markings. I still like the white ones the best, but I also like the ones that have neat looking markings.

Mom and I tried to take flight shots of Rudy once. They ended up just being super blurry. They have photo days at the Raptor center, and there is one session where they bring out the flight team. People get these beautiful shots of them, and these are trained birds. I can't imagine trying to get good shots of wild birds.

She's very pretty. I just realized the link to her chick pic wasn't working. I fixed it.

Yeah they have such short feet and are so fat. Pigeons have longer legs.

That mutation is called a Blue Check. I guess because they have checker patterns on the wings. I call them checker pigeons. I like the normal blue bars, but yeah white pigeons are very pretty.

It helps if you know where the birds will fly to and from, but yeah I admire those that get awesome shots of wild birds. I've seen some extraordinary stuff lately. BTW, Earthmother45 is posting some wonderful pics of a great horned owl nest. They have two babies. You should check her journal.

I went and looked at Earthmother45's owl pictures. They are so cute. I've been following a Great Horned Owl blog with a nest cam too. That nest has three baby owls in it. It's in Minnesota.

I forgot to post it on my journal today, but I have chickadees in the bluebird house.

Oh that's cool. I'm guessing it's not on livejournal.
Yeah Earthmother takes pics every few days and they are all very nice posts. I'm glad you looked.

That pitcher with the fangs looks really cool. Your chickens have a nice cache of eggs in the nest there. I like how they were waiting in line to get to it.

I loved those fanged pitchers. You should see them when they are opened. Yeah, I still need to clean out that nest.
