Ophidius, Echo, orchid and antipode
I've been making great progress on my expressions exercise. I think I have 14 or 15 of 25 done. I decided to color up Angry today because it's one of my faves that I've made. I also made it into an LJ icon. You can finally see his face in this one. Here's the full sized version.

Very simplistic. Shading only. Not real lights on this other than in his eyes. But I love it. So sinister. Usually he's comical, but when he gets angry and is ready to use his powers he can be frightening and dangerous. So this is a sneak peak of what to expect. When I'm done with all the expressions I'll put them into my own chart since I have decided I am going to change the original one and add a few new ones as well. What do you guys think?

I got my talking plush macaw yesterday. Oh gosh he's smaller than I remember. And it's not because I was a kid. I was a teen so I was full grown. I don't know why I remember him bigger. Anyway, pics behind the cut.

I had the red one. I wish I could find him or find another red one to buy.

Here's his voice box. Mine was very different and skinnier. The fact this one has lasted this long means this model is sturdier. I was never hard on my toy and it always broke. I found an engineer once that fixed the board for me, but it broke again from shaking, when you're supposed to shake it because that's how you activate it. Gah! Also I had forgotten how loud the voice box was. You couldn't play with it outside the parrot because it was very loud and no volume. But I used to spend hours on my bed talking to my Echo and laughing so hard. "Pretty bird." "Pretty bird." "I love you." "I love you." "How are you?" "How are you?" "HAHA!" "HAHA!" And well after that I couldn't stop laughing. Those of you that have heard me know how contagious my laugh is. Clearly even I am not immune to it. I would also make up long sentences to see how much I could make him say before his memory filled up. That always caused fits of laughter too. My mother the extrovert couldn't understand how I could spend so much time in my room making so much noise by myself.

My new Rhynchostylis retusa orchid. It's a tiny thing, but it has a new leaf coming in. Got here all the way from Hawaii. I hope it will do well for me. These are gorgeous! But right now it's a shrimp. I was impressed it came with that black basket. I thought it would be bare root. So nice. I need to leave good feed back.

How many of you know what the Antipode is? Or have you ever heard of it? I learned this word in college when I was studying paleontology. The antipode is the exact opposite end of the Earth. It was telling Chris about this today. You know in cartoons how some one digs a hole and ends up upside down in China? I thought about this when Chris saw a chicken digging and sitting in her hole and she was so deep he said she was going to China. Haha. Well I told him that funny though that is most places won't be in China but you'd probably end up in an ocean which would suck because 75% of the Earth is water. I guessed the antipode of our town or at least of Florida was an ocean.

Well I found this awesome site called The Antipode Map. You pick a place on the Earth and in the bottom map it shows you the antipode. I was right. Our antipode is in the Indian Ocean just west of Australia. If you're in the northern hemisphere your antipode will naturally be in the southern hemisphere and vice-versa. (Anyone know how to spell that?) Unfortunately almost every place on Earth has its antipode in the ocean. I even started in Russia which is the biggest country and nothing. Other than north Russia and north Canada having a little bit of land in Antarctica. A piece of Spain ends up in northern New Zealand. Parts of Argentina do end up in China. But most of the rest of the world gets Ocean. The map is a bit tricky to get used to. It only works with the top one and the cursor stays in the center so you need to line up the map to it not the cursor to the map. You can zoom in to your street and find your house, but you'll have to zoom out again to see where in the world you end up. So where is your antipod? What ocean?

Awesome, I love how Ophidius looks in this pic. I hope that you do this for all the other faces of your meme. I know it will a lot of work but it will be worth it.

It was so neat how you discovered the antipode. Assuming we could survive the bone crushing pressures of the earth to the other side and the bone crushing depths of the sea, it would be a great trip.

I'm glad you got your bird back. You told me about those before, but I had never really seen one. I bet it's also fun to get into arguments with it.

Thanks babes. Yes, all will be colored like this with basic shading and a gradient background. I'm so looking forward to finishing this one up. This guy is so much fun!

I've been very amused playing with that antipode map.

I missed Echo so much. Haha, I've never had an argument with him. I should try that.

My antipode is in the Indian Ocean just west of Australia. It's probably not that far from yours since if you zoom out and look at the whole earth, we aren't that far apart. I was able to put the cursor on the part of my house I'm actually sitting at.

I think I'd seen those parrots before.

I bet yours is more south in the Indian Ocean than mine since you're further north. You can put the cursor on Tampa FL and it would be the same thing basically as my house. I just randomly placed the cursor on NC and you seem to be directly west of Perth Australia which is definitely more south than where I was.

Oh, I'm glad you've seen them then.

EDIT: OMG, I was doing a search for talking parrot toy hoping to find more info on mine and the red one and I found this!

This budgie! I want all three. Oh man how do I get one? I'm going to have to look into this.

Nice work on Ophidius, I like his fangs!
The parrot is cute too. He reminds me of a toy parrot I have called Yakky Jr. It was the small version of the Yakky parrot and was mainly purple. You squeezed it and it would say a phrase. I was always playing with it but its voice box was sewn in so you couldn't take it out unless you picked open the stitches. I reckon the battery has probably leaked by now.
My antipode is in the Indian Ocean, near New Zealand.

Thanks. I do too. It's the one thing of his true form he couldn't hide.
Oh, that's silly they made them so you couldn't open and change batteries. I loved mine and thought they were the best, but the ones on the perches that moved their wings and beaks were more popular.
Ah, you're in the Indian Ocean too.

I love his angry expression. Very perfect :)

I forgot to comment about your plush toy bird the other day. What were you talking about? A cross between a Maca and something else! Anyway, my #2 son had onme of them when he was a kid. He loved it and took it everywhere with him. He once entered it in a teddy bear's picnic dress up competition. He put it in a little coat, sunglasses and a motorbike helmet, and put it on a little kid's motor bike, and it won second prize! He still has it today. Its name is 'Birdie'. Your's is very pretty. #2 son's used to repeat whatever yu said to it, but that part broke. I even had to mend it once when he was still a kid. I replaced its yellow legs with stripy material, because that's what I had on hand.

I've heard of the antipodes. I live in it! Very approximately, we are opposite England. At least, that's what they joked back in the day. And if we dig we are supposed to end up in China, but we all know that's not really true.

Thanks. I'm very pleased with how this one turned out.

Yeah, a macaw and a cockatoo. I call it a macatoo hehe. That's awesome your son had one of these. I can totally understand why he loved it so much. That's awesome he got 2nd place.

Your antipode is the North Atlantic.
kabuldurkabuldur on February 14th, 2013 11:02 am (UTC)
Oh yeah, a macaw and a cockatoo, that's right. A Macatoo, hehe :)

I can't believe how many typos I had in that comment! I'm glad you could understand it!

That's pretty cool about the Antipode Map. Yep, our opposite is right out there in the Indian Ocean west of Australia.

Your spelling of vice-versa looks right to me.

I don't know of anyone else that has such a green thumb as you do. You take such extra good care of your plants and it shows!
Des: Nepenthes bicalcaratathagirion on February 13th, 2013 03:48 pm (UTC)
It's a fun map to play with.
Aw, thanks. I just do a lot of studying on the plants that I like. I have a habit of choosing difficult species.

I hadn't heard of the antipode stuff before. That is cool. I'm in the ocean with Perth, Australia a little north and a good way east on the map.

That's great your orchid came in a basket, when you were expecting bare root. Always a nice surprise.

Ooops. Almost forgot to add, as I was distracted by the antipode thing, great picture! Even before I read what you wrote under it, I found the eyes quite striking. He looks fierce there.

Hehe, that's cool. You're further north than my other friend so I can see why you'd be more south next to Australia. Most of the Eastern US will be somewhere in the Indian Ocean.

Yes, a very nice surprise and even better when it fit perfectly into the wood basket I had bought for it.

Thanks. I'm very glad you liked him. :D Haha, that's funny because one of the expressions in the line up is "fierce". I have him under angry but I can still easily change stuff around. We'll see what comes out when I actually draw that one. I was surprised how his eyes turned out brighter than Thanatos. Never been a fan of brown eyes but these light brown ones work very well.
