Always planning and scheeming
Yesterday the 4th was an anniversary. We didn't do much but say "Happy Anniversary" to each other because Chris had so much work and I didn't remember to say it until he'd left. But that's ok because next month is our 17 year total anniversary. That's the big one. Wow, seventeen years is awesome. I want to do something really special for it and I've gotten spoiled that the last few times we've traveled in February for it. But this year I don't think we'll be able to do much. Now that the holidays are over my saving is getting back to normal. I'd love to do another cruise this year or visit one of my online friends. I think I have saved almost enough for one travel ticket but not quite. I'm open for art commissions if anyone wants one. My prices are in the links of my sidebar. It would go towards saving for our trip.

Since I got paid yesterday I put in a small order on Ebay for two calendars. I love having calendars everywhere. That's two of the five I need. I'll order another one next week. I also put in an order from some special gourd seeds from Quarry Gourd Farms. I haven't ordered from them in ages but they have great stuff and have been meaning to for a few years now.

Three budgies on curtain rod

Here's Tesla, Peep and Optic playing on the curtain rod. Peep has mellowed out a lot and doesn't fight with Tesla so much. In fact I can keep them in the same cage now and they have been good. The fights seem to happen more now when they are out. They are getting better at flying in a flock too. Peep is the best flying. He's always been really good at it. I worry though because he's getting old.

Christmas banner budgies

In this pic you can see most of my Merry Christmas banner. I've been meaning to get a pic of it but never could because of the bad back lighting. I've slowly been taking down the Christmas stuff. I'll have everything down by the 7th because I leave at least the tree up for El Dia de los Reyes Magos. That translates to to the day of the magi or Three Kings Day. It's the celebration of when the three kings brought gifts to baby Jesus. It's common to see them in nativity sets for Christmas, but they didn't arrive on his first birthday but much much later. Possibly years later. I've heard some people say Jesus was six. I don't know. But I like that the day is on Jan 6th. It's another day I observe but don't follow through with all the traditions though I like them. Latin children put out shoes on their front door and the kings leave them small gifts in the shoes. It reminds me of our Stocking tradition. I found an neat article that Disneyland in California celebrated it which I think is cool for an obscure holiday in the U.S. Here is the article. I wish Disneyworld were doing the same thing since they are so close to us. May-be they are, I just haven't heard about it.

Chris bought me an awesome book called Chicken Gardens. I have started reading it and it has beautiful pictures. I've been looking at Coops online too and trying to get ideas and inspiration for the kind of house I want to build for my girls. It has to be something easy to clean that looks nice and is very sturdy. I'd love to do a house shaped one but I don't know how to build triangle roofs. I only know how to build slanted shed style which is the second easiest roof you can make. A totally flat room is easiest but not good because it collects standing water. The boom mentioned something cool I hadn't considered. Make the roof out of plastic or metal and add a gutter to catch rainwater. It's safe unlike getting water from roofs with asphalt or gravel like our house. I'd rather not have a house on stilts this time just because it's hard to get that concreted in but it's probably worth the hassle. Our pigeon loft has done great that way. Though I don't like the look of that one on My Pet Chicken for my current needs it may be the best way to go still. I had considered for a moment having the chickens live in the shed part of the bird aviary. Then I can have all the birds in one place. But then they'd poop all over the floor and I'd have to add shavings and it wouldn't be clean for keeping spare cages, breeding cages and supplies.

The book confirmed what I already knew. Chickens don't need lots of room if they only use the coop for sleeping in. That's how my set up is. I like my girls to always be free ranging. They don't do well locked up especially Henrietta. Chickens are meant to be free. And in a confined space there's more bullying which I have already noticed. The weather has been so crappy though. It's been dark and drizzly and not the cool kind of rain. It's also been cold so I haven't had a chance to destroy the old coop or put up the fence. We did buy some netting and some more posts. But I only have enough to do one section. They'll still be able to jump over another break. I need to get the fence fixed because then I can leave the patio door open and they can be free again then come home at night to the patio until I can build them a new coop.

See my back dated post about the hawk and phoebe that I encountered. From the time when LJ was down. It's very interesting.

Cute budgies. Especially Optic because she looks just like Rudy. All the decorations in our house are already down except the tree and the outside lights.

Hey I'm glad to see you back. I have been thinking about you. I'm going to take down the little village today and a few other easy to put away things. I'm glad you like my budgies. Yeah Optic is like Rudy. She's a normal blue.

The budgies look really cute playing together. We took our Christmas stuff down today, its all gone back up in the attic now. That's interesting about Three Kings Day. That book sounds very useful.

Thanks. The budgies have a lot of fun flying around. I got my village put away yesterday. I'll work on more stuff today and hope by tomorrow to have it all down. Every thing's going to be so boring for a while til I decorate again. It's a neat holiday. I'm enjoying the book.

Happy anniversary! Yournext month one will indeed be a big one.

That chicken gardens book sounds good. Good luck with choosing your new design. Yes, chooks do not need to have a big sleeping place, but need to get out of it first thing in the morning. Yes, chooks are happiest free ranging and make better eggs (though that is secondary to their welfare).

Thank you. Yeah, I'm looking forward to next month's.

I like this book a lot so far. Here's some info on it.

Yes safety was more important then them being out. But today I was happy to let them out. Chris helped me put up the fence yesterday. It's temporary one but I think this will hold them finally until I can get more real fencing.

We have really small coops for our chickens and they do just fine in them, because they pretty much only sleep there. We try to let them out as early as possible and put them in around nightfall. That Chicken Gardens book sounds cool.

Your birds look adorable in that picture.

Yeah, I thought about that years ago and all the books say each chicken needs four square feet. When I looked at coops they said things like 4 hens only four a 4x4 house and thought it was crazy by those specs I'd need a giant shed or barn. But I noticed my chickens only use the coops to sleep in and sometimes lay eggs in. So they only need enough perch space to accommodate them all. The book confirmed this and said it's one foot of perch space per bird and they cuddle so they don't need long perches either. HA! I thought so. My crappy coop is 4x4 feet, the one that says it's only for 4 hens. I have two perches in there and it works fine at night. They do mostly sleep sometimes 4 to a perch all even but some times it's rare but I've seen six on one perch and two on the other so they all were mooshed together on the one perch.

I do want to get more chickens eventually. I really want a Buff Orpinton. I'm thinking trying to rebuild that one I saw on My Pet Chicken is the way to go. My only concern is with the perches where can I put the feeders and water so aren't under them.

Thanks. These budgies are a lot of fun.
