Chickens, plants and Thanksgiving
It's been so cold today. Mostly upper 50's. I went out long enough to install the posts and set up the chicken wire on the fence. This should help limit the chickens getting out. There is still one place they could escape through but they don't seem to know it's there yet so hopefully they won't find out. I need one more post and a bit more chicken wire and it will be good.

Speaking of chickens, cheezey wanted to see how my chickens get fed by name so I made this video of it.

This is really the time of year when I start looking at my favorite online stores and wanting so much stuff. I went to My Pet Chicken and they have new rare breeds for the first time again. This was the place I got my Black Copper Marans two years ago. I can't believe it's been that long. Now they have Blue Copper Marans. I think the hens are prettier than the roosters where as in the black ones both hens and roosters are very nice. They also have Ameraucanas. Those are true breeds of blue egg layers and what they use to make the Easter Eggers. Easter Eggers are mixed and not a pure breed. You can't compete with them. Ameraucanas are hard to find so it's cool they carry them now though they are sold out for all of next year. So the breeds I want are:
Buff Orpington
Salmon Faverolles
Light Brahma
Blue Splash Marans
Blue Copper Marans
Blue Splash Ameraucana
Black Jersey Giant

The original ones on my list are still priority though. And I saw This Chicken Coop I want. Other than the trap door at the bottom, I'm thinking I could build this myself then not have to pay so much. I've studgied the pics over and over. There are only a few things I don't know. If it's 6 feet tall standard at the center how tall is the living space at the highest point? I'm guessing 3 feet and those are 3 foot stilts. It's 6x4'. I like that it can hold 12 birds and a coop like that gives me the option to finally get the other chickens I've been wanting. I just need more detail on the dimensions. I haven't built anything like this in ages and would love to do so again. What's interesting is that it looks like the stilts are built into the frame. Not sure if I like that. On my pigeon loft I kept the base and the top spearate. The floor was part of the base and drilled into it. I should probably stick with what I know because last time I followed someone else's plants it turned out terrible and I'm still stuck with it.

I got my plant in the mail today. I'm very glad I got my N. sanguinea black because when I went on California Carnivore's website today it was gone. I think I got one of the last ones. It's a small plant that looks bigger in the pics than it is.

Here's a close up of the biggest pitcher.

Home Grown Squash Geese Pilgrims

These are the gourd gees pilgrims. The same company that made my radish tiel made these. I didn't have any pilgrim stuff and since they were gourds and birds Chris got them for me. I love the detail on them. The feet are leaves.

And they even have a bloosom end.

I can't wait to get my other order. But it hasn't shipped yet. Now that Thanksgiving is coming I don't know if I'll get it this week or if he'll wait until next week to ship or what. I hope not. But I know there's no mail Thrusday.
And Thanksgiving is coming way too fast. It kind of snuck up on me. I hadn't realized it was this week. Eep! I put away the last of the Halloween stuff finally which was a plastic pumpkin and the spiders in the doorway. So there than what Chris wanted to keep in his room it's all Fall stuff now. But I don't feel I got to enjoy the decorations as long. I'll post a video next time of an awesome Thanksgiving house.
My week started today and it may be a bad one. My back is really hurting because of it and stuff just hurts. I don't feel so well right now. I should probably be in bed gaming.

That is one of the neatest things I've ever seen!!! Loved watching it--had a big smile on my face the whole way through.

For me, upper 50s is warm. Its been lower 40s here. I wish I lived in a warmer place like you.
Hehe Zucca's a greedy girl XD She grabbed the last piece!
I have my new calendar, it's Cars again. I always try and get a Cars one if I can. Mainly cos there are no other ones I want right now.

The plant looks nice and the gourd geese are cool!
I have lots of stuff coming in the mail I can't wait to arrive!

Thursday night will be in the upper 40's which won't be good. I need to bring all the nepenthes in again. Hehe, I wish I lived in a warmer place like Miami or something further south even where it never frosts.
Zucca is naughty. She stole a lot during this. There are a lot of cool designs at www.calendar.com I have to narrow down my choices and decide what I want for this year.

I love getting stuff in the mail. That's great.

I saw this post yesterday but didn't have time to watch the video. It is great! Your chooks really do seem to know their names. I'm glad you got your fence fixed, and yeah, hopefully they will not find the other spot you know about.

I have some sorts of chooks I want to get too, such as Wyandottes and Anconas bare necks and light Sussexes. Oh, and I like Rhode Island Reds, too. And Gyro told me about Barnefelders. Aaagh, you're tempting me!

I had a look at the coop. I like the ventilation at the top. The guy up the road was telling me about the virtues of a chook hopuse raised up off the ground. I can see his point. I liked a small two-storied chook house I saw on City Chicks, and would have liked to have gotten it for my granddaughters, but my daughter decided against it. Unfortunately it is not for sale any more. I like the idea of automatic opening doors, too. I think that the stilts built into the frame is a good diea. That's how I'd do it. I think it makes the whole structure stronger, a must here in this climate.

Lucky you got that black N. sanguinea when you did! It looks liek a nice plant, too.

Aaaw...that was nice of Chris to get you those gourd gees pilgrims :)

I can't believe Thanksgiving is coming up so fast!

I'm really sorry about your back. Probably the cold temps aren't helping it.

I almost missed this. Glad I saw it. They're very smart birds. Chickens have surprised me. I had heard so much that chickens aren't smart and after having parrots nothing can compare. No they aren't as smart as parrots but they're still pretty smart and have surprised me with what they can learn. The fence has been great. So far no one has jumped over into the front. My pumpkin decorations are safe!

I've heard of almost all of those or seen them in books. Haha, tempting you? I'm trying to fight the temptation myself. I want all of those hehe.

It's a very nice hen house. I'm getting more and more confident that I can build that the more I think about it. My pigeon loft is very sturdy with the legs concreted into the ground and the frame for the legs and floor built first. I'm afraid to experiment after what happened last time. My father in law taught me basic woodworking skills. I wish I still had someone to coach me on that, but what I learned from him was very valuable. I'm glad I don't have to take snow into consideration at least.

Yeah, they are gone now. I hope it will do well for me. They say they are one of the easiest plants.

Love those geese pilgrims. They are so funny. I know. Thanksgiving is tomorrow but now I'm feeling ready for it.

It gets worse when I start my period and I always forget that's a symptom of it starting.

Aaagh! Thanksgiving already! Enjoy your pies!

That's really good that your father-in-law taught you that stuff. How nice of him. Your pigeon loft sounds very sturdy. I know what you mean. Stick with what you know, and then you won't have any mistakes. Very wise.

That video was adorable! I did laugh at the ones trying to take food out of turn. Raptor is really cute, I love her coloring.

That chicken coop looks pretty nice. I've seen that design before and it looks like a good one as long as you don't live in a high wind area. Because of my experiences, I saw that and realized it'd be nice until the first time it got blown over in a wind storm. I think we'd have to have it backed up against a fence or something here to prevent it from being toppled and wrecked if we had one like that. You probably can find the plans online somewhere, or at least for one similar, if you want to try building it.

Are you planning on getting any of those chickens this year? I'm thinking of getting a few this coming spring, including another rooster. I miss my roosters.
Des: Henriettathagirion on November 24th, 2012 04:13 pm (UTC)
It's fun to feed them and there are always at least two that steal when they aren't supposed to. Usually it's Zucca. Raptor is gorgeous. She's so different from the other Easter Eggers. Her nick name is 80's wave because her feathers look like an 80's hair since they go both ways on her head.

I had my very first pigeon loft on stilts like this but it was buried two feet into the ground with concrete and a cinder block. It weathered hurricanes beautifully so I'm not worried about that. Yeah, I don't like the idea of just setting it on the ground. My pigeon loft is raised a foot off the ground and it's concreted the same way.

Yes, I really do want to get those new chickens. But I can't until I get a bigger coop. I'll have to look into making one for the new year then perhaps I can order some chicks again. I definitely recommend My Pet Chicken not only for great service but they allow a minimum of 3 chicks which is great. Everywhere else it's a minimum of 25 and that's way too much for most people. What kind of rooster would you get? I think black coppper marans are lovely roosters. And they are cheaper than hens.
