Cell phone rant +

Figured I'd put the whole thing behind a cut because I don't know how long this will be. I hate the whole cell phone movement that's in force today and how it's screw up things online. I don't own a cell phone and that's because I don't drive much or go out much. I think the only reason there should be cell phones are for those that do drive for emergenices and for work. People that travel for their businesses need phones. Cell phones do have their place but substituing for computers is not one of them. Phones are for talking and computers are for surfing. I made a video on youtube about the right way to respond and have a conversation in the comments. But it's the cellphone people saying they can't do it that way so they send PM's as replys which I hate. I don't want a PM for a public conversation. And supposedly the reply button doesn't appear on cell phones. Well that just shows you shouldn't be surfing on your cell phone anyway. Get a computer moron. I don't care who you are even if you're my friend. This is becoming more and more frequent and I have no sympathy if someone doesn't have a computer. Too bad. If you want a protable computer that's what a laptop is for. They make tiny ones now that are only 10 inches. Heck I think even those tables or Ibooks are like a laptop. Those were meant to be computers. Phones are not. They're too small and they clearly can't do normal things like response to comments.

Youtube has now gone on sneakily again and taken away another aspect of our control. I used to be able to make my videos not available on cell phones and TV's. Well the syndication option is still visble and it even turns into a hand like you could click it but you can't. It says new videos are available everywhere now and they lie to you making you think you can edit and restrict where you your videos show up. But no Haha, that's a fake link. You can't really click it. Youtube used to be awesome with how much control we had, but not anymore.

And livejournal is doing something similar. Remember I have my journal set so only people on my friends list can post? It's because people were responding with facebook accounts. I found out this is the same problem on communities here and I have to set my membership to moderated which sucks. That means I have to approve real LJ members as well. Turns out you can make a fake account here based on your facebook or twitter name. You don't even have to have a journal. It's just a crappy profile page where you can collect "friends" and like those worthless sites make youself feel popular. Way to go LJ. Your membership sucks as it is and instead of encouraging people to get real journals you're now allowing them to make fake profile pages? You're as bad as they are because these aren't members.

I have a a track phone, and all it does is make calls. Even though I don't drive much, and can't drive unaccompanied, I still get lots of use out of it. The main thing I use mine for is to call home if I'm out by myself and I need a ride.

I think that's fine. If I get a phone I want one of those "granny phones" because it doesn't do anything but make calls. It's for people that are technologically impaired which I'm definitely not but I want my phone to be just a phone not a computer.

I'm not technologically impaired either, but I don't need a phone that does everything, and I don't need the internet at my fingertips all the time.

Yeah neither do I. When I'm out I want to be out and not thinking about online. When I'm online, I want all my features.

I got an Android because it's useful for what I need it for but surfing on it isn't fun at all and I would never substitute it for a computer. I can't touch as fast as type so replying to comments on Facebook is slow. I've been on YouTube on it once and that was when you asked me to check for you. I haven't tried to respond to comments on it but that's pretty stupid it forces you to make PMs anyway. As for YouTube's dead links, that is totally unprofessional. Everyone knows a good site does not have dead links. They should let people make videos not available on cell phones. As you say, not everyone wants people on cells to see the videos anyway. I really hate how things go downhill like that. They try and improve but make things worse. It's like the new MSN. We were eventually all forced to upgrade to it. I refuse to use it now and have moved to Skype. Sometimes I log on but merely to see my only friend who only has MSN. It looks horrible now and is not as customisable anymore.
The LJ thing is stupid too. It's a journal site; what the hell is the point in making fake profiles for it?? Just join like everyone else has.

Yeah, because they are small and don't have enough memory they can't do what even small laptop can do. I've had a few people tell me they don't have computers because they use their phones only. WTF? They need to get a computer then. Yeah I have a video that shows how the reply button comes up. I put it up for newbies and found out that it's not newbies that were causing the problems but cellphone people. It sucks it happens with all sites eventually. If I ran a site like that I wouldn't let it happen. I'd rather it go dead first.

Yep I have one on my profile. Her name is shelia cannon. It's towards the bottom of my page. Was added I think last year. Waste of space because she'll never be able to respond here. And if you look at her profile it's not even a journal. I think it just goes to her facebook. LJ is stupid to allow these.

Unfortunately it looks like everything is going mobile phone now. People even watch movies on them. I don't know why. The picture is so small. But it sucks that you can't stop people from commenting via their mobile phones. That's worrying what lj is doing, too.
Desthagirion on July 14th, 2012 01:06 pm (UTC)
Yeah it sucks how it's all becoming this way. I don't have to participate in it of course but I don't want it ecroaching on my online life either which it is doing.

The only reason I like internet apps on my iPhone is so I can look stuff up while I'm out. The YouTube app is good if you want to find a song quick to listen to in the car or show someone you're out really quick, but to do a bunch of detailed commenting? No way. The apps aren't really meant for that. There's a reason most "mobile" versions of websites suck, is because they're trimmed down to the functionality that you'd expect people on a mobile would use them for- quickly checking up on something- not typical web surfing/internet usage. Plus typing on the phones is a pain in the ass for anyone who actually knows how to type. It's slow and tedious, and auto-correct is so bad there's a website dedicated to funny mistakes people make on auto-correct.
Des: Owen Painedthagirion on July 16th, 2012 11:31 pm (UTC)
I can imagine how typing would be a pain on that. I don't have a keypad for my xbox and it sucks highlighting each letter. I'm sure it's worse on a phone. These people that only use their phones really need to get a computer even if it's a small one. It's better to see stuff like you said than a tiny phone screen.
