So much neat stuff
I'm very excited. So much has happened. My buddy on the forums got the plant I sent him the other day. And my end of the trade is coming in the mail (provided no stupidity from the mailman) today. I can't wait! I'll be getting several seedlings of N. sumatrana and N. albomarginata red. N. sumatrana is rare and few people grow it because it's a lowland. Most people in North America can only grow highlands because of the cold winters they get. I think only Florida and Hawaii can grow lowlands outdoors which is nice. I have a dream that if I ever got rich I'd buy a mountain in El Salvador and build two houses on it. One at the foot and one at the top. Then I could grow my lowlands at the bottom and my highlands at the top. Hehe, that would rock!

Anyway the baby bluebirds are getting big!

Four baby bluebirds

SO CUTE!! They should leave the nest any day now.
EDIT: All the babies just fledged. I wasn't able to film or get pics unfortunately. There was also a blackracer upsetting all the birds. I chased it off.
EDIT:EDIT: Actually I did get this one pic before the last baby popped out.

Say Good Bye

I feel kind of sad now that they are gone and that I missed my chance to document such a cool thing. I'd documented everything else. Now my story is incomplete.

And my rarest Aristolochia has bloomed. Check out this little beauty!

Aristolochia rajah flower 02

Aristolochia rajah. I wanted this plant because it's a white flower with yellow, pink and brown. But what came as a total surprise to me was the small size. I thought this would be a bigger flower like six inches. It's super small as you'll see. I'm not disapointed just unexpected and shocked. The dutchman's pipevines are a family filled with flowers that look like baby birds begging for food.

So more photos behind the cut of this plant and of this year's Easter eggs.

Aristolochia rajah flower 01

This pic is cool because the pink really makes this flower look like an animal with vines. A baby bird again.

Aristolochia rajah flower bud

Here's an unopened bud.

Aristolochia rajah tiny flower

And here you can see how small they are.

Seen from behind.

Colored eggs 2012

And here are some of the Easter Eggs. I think I did better last year over all. I still say it's darn hard to color with a white crayon on a white egg. Click on the photo to see what the boxes say each one is.

Colored Easter eggs 2012

Same eggs only turned so you can see the other side.

I need to rewatch the tissue culture videos by my friend again today. I took notes last year but they got lost. This time I will take them again and save them on the computer. They were hand writen and I don't know where they went. His videos are good for starting but difficult to sit through. I'm annoyed with myself that I have to sit through them again.

I guess that's it for now. Just looking forward to a bunch of stuff.

Those baby birds are precious. I have a picture that is almost exactly like that from a few years ago. I love the picture of the baby peeking out of the nextbox hole too.

Pretty Easter Eggs. We didn't get to color any eggs this year.

I really miss them. There's nothing there that interesting now except the feeder. I hope I'll see them around the yard.

Thanks. It was fun to color them.

If you sweep out the old nest, they may build another. I think we had two successful broods in our box one year. They can have up to three broods in a year, and they like to use the same box over. Sometimes they start right in as soon as the old nest is swept out.

The chickadees in our bluebird house have hatched.

Yep, I need to get around to doing that.

Oh that's great!

Awesome, I hope the plants arrive safe and sound! The little Bluebirds are so cute! It's good you got photos of them at least.
Glad the plants are doing well too and the easter eggs look very festive. Easter festive lol!
Des: Spring - Egg wreaththagirion on April 11th, 2012 04:49 pm (UTC)
Thanks, me too. Still waiting. I feel a little better now about the bluebirds. I hope I will see them around. Now I need to remove the old nest and disinfect the box.
The eggs were fun. Chris has been eating them.

I've never seen baby birds in a nest - so much I've seen, but not that. They are darling the way they are huddled up. And your Easter Eggs are really pretty.

Could you please explain "tissue culture videos"? I'm new to your journal and don't know the context yet.
Des: Biologythagirion on April 12th, 2012 12:34 am (UTC)
Aren't they cute? I'm glad I can show you something new. I enjoy teaching others. Thanks, I'll never get sick of coloring eggs for Easter.

Tissue Culture is plant cloning. I tried my hand at it last year with some carnivorous plant seeds but didn't do very well. I have a feeling I can do better this year but I lost all my notes so I have to watch my friend's video where I learned how to do that. They are on youtube. Here is my tag for my posts on Tissue Culture if you want to see some of the photos I took last year.

The birds look awesome. ^__^ I hope they will have a long and great life.

The eggs we made had similar colours like yours blueish/pink-ish :D, we tried the metalized version again this time. There you just have to press a special silver foil onto the coloured and still wet eggs and then some parts of the silver stays on them.
I have not drawn stuff by hand on eggs since ages, maybe I should try that next time also.
Des: Happy Easter - Chickthagirion on April 12th, 2012 12:33 pm (UTC)
It was nice to have them. I hope I will see them again.

I've never made the metal ones. I need to find a kit for that. I bet you'd do a great job. You can probably draw without looking for simple art.

Awwww, what adorable babies! Fly, little ones!

Beautiful eggs, too. The Peeps, budgies, and other artwork came out remarkably well considering how difficult it IS to draw with a white crayon on white eggs. I was very pleased with most of mine this year (especially the one for my dog with her lovely face drawn on the back of it, lol)--again, considering how lame PAAS was with their kit. Only six color tablets when I'm used to getting nine...no yellow or pink--and no wax crayon, forcing me to use my own white Crayola, which made a lot of my writing and pictures come out lousy. D: Ah, well.

Love the tiny little buds of cuteness as well, and the two-houses-on-a-mountain idea! XD
Des: Peeps in a Basketthagirion on April 13th, 2012 01:28 am (UTC)
I miss them. I cleaned out the nest today and hope the parents will use it again.

Hehe thanks. Yeah it's hard. I bought two kits. We ran out to Walgreens last minute because I couldn't find last year's crayon. I wanted to draw on the eggs this year even if they were bad drawings. I forgot to cover this on your journal but yeah carnivorous plants. See I even drew them on the eggs. Let me know if you want to order plants and I can point you in the right direction and tell you who to avoid. Whatever you do don't buy from Pet Flytrap. If you check my tags you'll see how they rip people off and are just irresponsible. I had to sick the BBB on them.

Hehe those little pipevines are awesome. I'm in love. I checked it today and one vine will eventually get a bunch of little flowers. I can't wait!
Haha, yeah. I was fantasizing about the moutnain idea again today.
Michi: Ruby_x_blackroses_x on April 13th, 2012 06:34 am (UTC)
Aw, I hope so too. :] Have to put out our birdseed. I found an adorable metal tomato-shaped birdhouse last year that my dad offered to buy for me. x3

Haha, all of the Easter stuff around here sold out hella quick this year. Usually we can get candy and decorations on sale afterward, but this time there's hardly a thing. I ran back to my favorite Polish deli as soon after the holiday as I could to try and get one of the hand-painted eggs that we like to collect (the longass line and lightning-quick cashier had prevented me from being able to get one on my first visit)...pretty much everything was gone. I figured they should have more in the back, but no dice. Or the terse lady didn't feel like helping anybody. Pheh.

Thanks for the advice about the plants! If I wind up needing to order some I know where to turn. Oh, that's great! Go little pipevines, go!! +D Hahaha. Ahh, fantasizing...how I spend at least a good 2/3 of my life, lol. xD

Oh yeah, and I went and looked at your Bahamas pics that you'd mentioned. WOW...what a crazy gorgeous ship, and hotel, and plants, and birds...ay yi yi! I'd love to go there and go SCUBA diving. Love beaches. At least one of my many planned future trips will definitely have to be an extended cruise. All of the wildlife and beautiful buildings in the Bahamas certainly are inspiring--that one colorful, painted cafe is sooooo my kind of place. All in all a great trip, clearly, with a lot of fascinating sights...like that model ship and the cave, oh my! I find caves awesome! Was just thinking/talking about that yesterday while reading a magazine article on blind fishes...
The pics of you were fun and cool to see, too. ;) I enjoyed your hair, outfits, and "devious" expressions! And our laptops are very similar.
Des: Sunballthagirion on April 14th, 2012 12:42 pm (UTC)
There are lots of very creatively shaped bird houses and feeders out here.

With my car not working I haven't had a chance to look around. It's probably all gone here too by now.

No prob, I can point you to some good vendors.

Ah, you must have gone through my tags. It's unfortunate it was so cold. We couldn't swim. I could have gone scuba diving anyway because I'm not certified. I loved that Banana Beach cafe. That was so lovely. Yeah the ship model and the cave were some of my favorite things too.
Hehe, I love we have so much in common including love of pastel and bright colors. So now we even have similar laptops.
Michi: Sasha La Fleur_x_blackroses_x on April 26th, 2012 10:33 pm (UTC)
Awesome, I love those! Our feeder is pretty standard-looking, but effective. I've seen so many cute house/cottage/cabin-shaped houses, and ones shaped like trailers or vans...eee! There's also a elderly gentlemen in town who makes, paints, and sells brightly-colored birdhouses out of his garage; he even lives in an awesome green house. Last year I got one from Hallmark that was covered in seeds (was picked clean within days, of course.) And I like the clear ones that suction to windows so you can observe the birds. My dad just doesn't think our windows are too bird-friendly.

Sorry about your car! That stinks. Mine's having all the pollen washed off it by the rain right now. Terrible season for allergy sufferers!! So thankful I'm not one.

Yeah, the tags were really helpful in finding the photos. ^^ What a shame that you couldn't swim. I felt the same way when I went to Hilton Head Island, SC in January of last year. I actually still have to get my certification, but I already basically passed the SCUBA course. Whoo! YES, even more stuff in common, haha! 8D
Desthagirion on April 27th, 2012 12:24 am (UTC)
I saw the babies today. Two of them. The parents are starting a new nest.

I'll be posting a commission I'm working on very soon so keep watching. It involves a dog so you will probably like it but it's different. I think you should be able to see my latest post but I also posted some of my old dinosaur art.
Michi: Dixie_x_blackroses_x on May 2nd, 2012 02:30 am (UTC)
Awwww, yay! :D Above the door of our Pennsylvania house, there's a family of birds that builds a nest every year...it's there chosen spot. We're so honored, lol.

Ooooh, a dog--excellent! I'm definitely intrigued by anything canine. ;) Is it the cybernetic Doberman I saw mentioned?
Desthagirion on May 2nd, 2012 11:36 am (UTC)
I know the feeling of being honored by them choosing your nest.

Yes. When I posted this I wasn't sure if she would change the design so I didn't want to say anything. But she gave me the go ahead to start inking. Hopfully I can get to that soon.
kabuldurkabuldur on April 13th, 2012 09:31 am (UTC)
Those baby birds grew so quickly! I'm glad you got a pic of them so big just before they fledged. I like the pic of one peeking out of the hole, too.

Your Easter eggs are so pretty! I didn't think to take photos of the ones my granddaughters did. They used my eggs. One lot decorated the table for about a day before being cooked and eaten.

Aww...sorry the Dutchman's Pipe vine flowers turned out so little - but at least it flowered!
Desthagirion on April 14th, 2012 12:42 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I have not seen them since they left. I think they are gone for good.

Thanks, they were fun to make.

Nah, it's ok. It wasn't what I excpeted but it wasn't a disapointment. I'm happy it's finally flowered.
earthmother45earthmother45 on April 14th, 2012 06:01 pm (UTC)
What! Are those little bluebirds really ready to fledge? I can't believe how fast! I can imagine your disappointment at missing this and not getting any photos of it. I hope a family of new ones come in to fill the void soon.

The new Aristolochia rajah flower is very special and I can see and imagine different things in each photo, too. I wonder if maybe it will eventually put out larger flowers.

You and your Easter eggs -- :)) good job!
Des: Easter Bunniesthagirion on April 14th, 2012 07:38 pm (UTC)
I have not even seen the adults after the babies fledged. I cleaned out the old nest but who knows what will happen now. I'd like to build a covered arbor there for privacy and for the cars so now that they left and if they don't return perhaps I can accomplish that.

Isn't that such a neat little plant. It did make a new one that's bigger than this one, but I do not thing they will be much bigger.

Thanks. Eggs are fun to color.
