Aliens in my orchids
My phalenopsis orchid finally opened today. It took forever. I wasn't that excited about it until today when I finally saw it start to open. I know now that this is a purple flower. I have a friend on youtube that made a timelapse of his. Same kind and this is where I found out these orchids have "aliens" inside. Or bird heads, depending on how you look at them. I never cared about these kinds of orchids before but knowing they have an alien suddenly made them cool. Here's mine.

Alien in my orchid 1

It opens and the alien peaks out.

Alien in my orchid 2

Fully exposed now you can really see the alien, or bird head. He's staring at me as I type this.

Lastly a close up of the same picture. I think they look like the Independence Day aliens.

I got a dutchman's pipevine in the mail today that I'm trying to nurse back to health. It got really dried out on the trip over here. But I'm confident I can bring it around. It's an Aristolochia fimbriata. No flower yet just leaves. I'll post a pic once it's in better condition. It's one of the smallest aristolochias and it's flower is also very bizzare and out of this world.

Eh, I have a lot of plant news actually but I'm not feeling so well right now. I've been typing too much today for one and my fingers are hurting. Must get off. Sucks because I want to share more.

Edit: Oh and new icon too of a Nepenthes merrilliana.

Oh wow, that's so cool! I love how plants have interesting things like that.

Yeah, such a common flower you see in stores all the time and I hadn't noticed they have this neat thing about them.

Fabulous! And it will open even more!

Yes, it's open all the way now. The second bud you said looked wrong dried up and fell off, but there's a third one coming in now.

Once they start to open, it usually takes several hours for most to open all the way.

Yes, I didn't think that one would make it.
But I see the other one coming in and looks like more might develop, too.

The one I posted about--first orchid to open this year, already has five flowers, and more to come.

Oh, I like your new userpic icon.

You were right about the one that fell off. I don't think I'll get more than two. Three if I'm really lucky since the rest of the stem is very short. But I'm happy to get the ones it has. Now I know it's a purple flower. That's cool yours have gotten so many. Yours are much bigger too.

Thanks. I love merrillianas. I hope mine will get as big as that one. It's about the size of a football.

An alien is born. Looking forward to any time lapse you might do.

Dutchnam's Pipevines are interesting and I hope this one survives and we can see what it looks like.

Cool icon.

Hope you feel better soon :)

Hehe yes. I did a choppy one that took two hours. I found out I need to take images every 24 seconds so that's about all I can do manually. I need to get a program for my camera so it can take them automatically without me being there. Then I can do subjects that take longer.

Yes, I love pipevines. I think it will survive but looks like it's going to lose most of its leaves.

Thanks. Love those merrillianas.

Thanks. I feel much better this morning. Just my hand still hurts. I need to not mouse and type so much because I do want to work on art today in Illustrator.

Oh yeah, that really does look like an alien! It's a pretty cool-looking flower all-around.

Sorry to hear you're not feeling well. I hope you feel better soon.

It was neat to see it open up and that evil face inside.

Thanks. I'm feeling much better today. Just my right hand still hurts.
