Budgie on pigeon
I had a pigeon that got sick because it's been so cold. He wasn't getting enough food and couldn't compete with the others. I brought him inside to let him eat and recover. He needs to fatten up. The winter has been hard on the pigeons this time around. I lost Gorda today. She was so big and pretty and really not that old. She too was under weight. Nothing's changed so I need to see if someone's being a bully and not letting the others eat. I'll have to keep a closer eye on them.

Anyway, this un-named pigeon is doing better. I didn't have anywhere to put him so I stuck him in with my lone budgie girl. At first it didn't go well. Budgie was scared of him. But the following day she was bold and climbing on his back. Now pigeon was scared of her. I was worried she would hurt him because she's an aggressive budgie and why she's alone. But things finally calmed down and now pigeon doesn't mind that she rides him. If she gets too bitey he pecks softly and throw her off which is good. But he doesn't mind anymore and now even eats while she's on him. Here are some neat pics.

Pigeon and Budgie 01

Budgie girl appreaches wondering if she can get in the food. She has her own food up high because the first day pigeon ate EVERYTHING.

Budgie on pigeon.

Pigeon and Budgie 05

Pigeon eats despite budgie girl being on his back. "A budgie? Where? Really?"

Pigeon and Budgie 06

Budgie preens him.

Budgie preens while pigeon eats

Budgie gets bored and preens herself. Pigeon keeps eating. This pic would have been perfect had I not chopped off his beak. I think the budgie likes the soft feathers on her feet. He's a better perch than the wood she has.

And both of them kind of looking forward.

Pigeon is so ROUNDULAR!!! Such cute pics. I love when animals get along like this despite being different species.

Yeah, two very roundular birds hehe. They're very cute. Yeah it's rare. Mostly they would fight.

I didn't realise that there was such a size difference. I'm sorry that the winter has been hard on your pigeons. I love the white colour of this one.

that budgie is very cheeky. I love "A budgie? Where? Really?" the best, although all your photos of this are neat :)

Oh yes. Homing pigeons are huge. I have some pretty big birds. Thanks.
That was a funny pic. I'm glad you liked them.

As I was reading your post and saw the first picture, I said to myself, "Oh, I hope there's pictures of this!!!" And then . . . OH, what great pictures they are! I love when stuff like this happens~~it is just the sweetest thing. You should make a little video of them together. They look like they're going to be great friends! The first thing I thought of was "snow" when I saw him.

I'm sorry some of the birds are sick and for the loss of Gorda. That would be so hard going out and finding one of your birds dead. If the other birds are around, what do they do when that happens?
Des: Two White Homersthagirion on January 19th, 2012 01:17 pm (UTC)
I do have a video so I may put it up. It shows how she flies onto his back. Once he's well he needs to go back outside. I still worry they'll hurt each other. They are both rather aggressive species. Most of my pigeons are solid white like this.

Thanks. I need to make them some pigeon tea and add some antibiotics to their food and water in case anything is going on. Gorda was special. She had very pretty colors. Mostly white with some black and grey on her shoulders and tail. She was Punkin's mother. If you remember Punkin was my beloved pet pigeon that was super sweet. I took her death pretty hard.
The other birds don't notice death. It's rare that they do. They usually walk over the dead birds as if they aren't there.

Wow, I guess I'm a bit surprised at the bird's reaction when another bird dies. I thought they would have feelings towards one another.

Yes, I do remember Punkin.

Some birds do. But in flock if it isn't a mated pair they won't react. Her mate had died before. I have a pair of cockatiels that I love named Abigail and Cinnamon Bun. They are my favorites because I have never seen a pair of cockatiels so in love. They can't be separate even a few feet or they start screaming and feaking out. I know if something happened to one of them the other would be very sad.

I had my wonderful budgie Phage lose his first mate Dewdrop. He LOVED her. She got sick and I had to take her to the vet. She died there. I knew I had to tell Phage what had happened but I didn't want him to think I'd done it. So I had Chris put her little body in the cage. He did stay next to her for a while. I wanted him to understand she was gone. But after an hour enough was enough. I asked Chris to take her out for burial. I knew if I took her out it would also be bad. I warned him Phage would probably attack him. I knew my bird well. Sure enough when he picked her up Phage latched on to him. He didn't mind being the "bad guy" because the special relationship was with me and Phage.

These pictures are so great! It's always nice to hear the stories where different species get along but actually getting to see it in pictures is always so amazing. I, too, never realised how big your pigeons are. They are much bigger than the feisty little dove pigeons we get around our house. I really love the pretty pastel colours on your Budgie cool too. She's very pretty.

I'm very sorry for the loss of Gorda. I hope that you don't lose any others.

Thanks. I'm glad I could show that. Yeah they get along pretty well. Yes pigeons are big bird. I must take a pic of my biggest one. He's enormous and also a white pigeon. He's a homing pigeon too but a type called a king pigeon. I have a hard time getting my hands around him.
I love pastel budgies. The one in my icon was my best budgie Phage. Mostly he was light yellow and blue.

Thanks. It's a shame there's no one left from Punkin's line. Gorda was so pretty.

What a cute pair! I really liked the preening picture.

I'm sorry to hear about the loss of one pigeon. Hopefully this one continues to improve.

Thanks. I'm glad they're getting along. that's my favorite one too.
Thanks. Yes at least this one is on the mend.

Those are really cute, especially the one where she is preening his back and the one where they are both looking at the camera. Every time I see a white pigeon I want to pet it.

I'm sorry you lost Gorda. I can certainly understand bully birds and weight issues because Rudy is underweight now. I have the birds separated now because Nigel pestered him constantly, either bullying him away from food or being the typical frustrated unattached male budgie and wanting to flirt.

Thanks. I'm glad they get along. I was hoping they'd ignore each other but hadn't expected this. White pigeons that are petable are great.

Thanks. She was a good girl. I like female pigeons better. I'm going to do a second feeding to make sure everyone gets food. The chickens get two meals. I think the pigeons need it in the winter too. Oh gosh, yeah that's good you separated them.
