Been Busy
I've been so busy lately. I went to Lowe's yesterday and used up the last of my gift card. I got these giant "bird beak" clippers/purners. I've had two others and they broke and went bad on me. No more screwing around. I deiced to use the the whole balance and get a huge heavy duty one. It's almost too be for me, but bad plants better watch out now hehe. I picked up two tiny pots of Sweetpotato vine for $1.25 each at the dead plant sale. I love looking through Lowe's "dead plants" because you get such good deals on stuff that can be revived. Some stuff isn't even that far gone. Oh anyway, the sweetpotato vine is a host for sphinx months. So once this cold weather passes I hope I can plant it outside along part of the fence.

It's getting cold again. I hate it. Make it stop. The low for tonight and tomorrow night is supposed to be 41. I hope not. I brought in all the nepenthes again. This is my first winter with nepenthes and it's been "In out. In out." I had a feeling it would be this way. Though the highlands seem to like this weather better so long as it doesn't reach 40 and below. This is the only time that it's cold AND humid. A difficult combination.

I don't think I ever mentioned this but last year I had made a tentative schedule for myself to follow weekly. I started off great but didn't stick to it. I'm going to try to stick with it again. So here's what I've come up with.

9am-1pm - work, chores, birds, garden and any driving erands
1-2 - art or writing
2-3 - bass/music practice
after 3 Day's over. Free time.

This is M-F. Today I had lots of driving erands though so it messed up the whole schedule as I came home after 1 and then had to go out again a few times. Also the last hour I usually don't feel like playing and have yet to do so. So this is why it's a tentative outline and not somethin strickt. But I should try to stick with it to be more productive and meet my goals better.

Last week was great. Chris got a lot of jobs and we got paid well. But at the same time it's been hard because we haven't seen much of each other. I hope he can get a day off soon.

I'm disapointed in this one plant company. They had a Nepenthes truncata lowland for sale for $50. I've been eyeballing it for over a year. The lowland type is very rare in the states. It's a small plant too at only 4 inches. But it will get huge so I figured it was worth it especially now that I had some extra cash. I went to order and when I went to check out the wanted $35 shipping. WTF?!! No! No way. That would make it $85. And that was the cheapest. They're sending it two day express Fed Ex. Why can't they send it priority mail for $7? It's a small plant for pete's sake. I've bought more expensive plants that are bigger and shipping's not been more than $10. No wonder no one's buying. That's rediculous. I may email them and ask if they'll just ship priority mail. Plants can be shipped safely this way so there's really no excuse. I don't need it to arrive in exactly 2 days anyway. And Priority mail arrives in two days despite so there's really no reason for them to use an expensive company like FedEx.

So I went to Wal-Mart instead because I had to pick up a mailer for a seed trade I was doing with someone on youtube. I went into the bathroom and bed section and they had such nice towels and decorations. We really don't have much as far as this stuff goes. I'd like to get some nice things for us and the house. I've been wanting to for a long time now. So I decided to get something since I didn't get my rare plant. I chose a pastel blue bedset for our queen sized bed. We only have one set of bed sheets and they are old and faded. They had a special for these pretty ones for $30. That's really good. Next week if things go well I'd like to go back for more and get something for the bathroom or another set so we can alternate or mix match colors. Chris doesn't know about this yet so I'm hoping to surprise him when he gets home and sees the new sheets...provided he notices. Hehe, INTP's are bad about not seeing things in front of their faces. But he knows I'm up to something because I told him I'm working on a surprise.

The dryer's sensor on the door broke again. The little thing Chris put on it doesn't work anymore. So I found a video on how to take a part the dryer and we did that. The video was on how to replace the part. Well we didn't have a repalcement so we just bypassed the system and by splicing the wires together. We had to go to Radio Shack to get the little caps to keep the wires enclosed. I used to splice wires back in the 90's for my home theater systems. So this was familiar ground for me. It's funny because that latch on the door tells the dryer to shut off when the door is open. Now it will stay on even with the door open. But that's ok. It can be shut off by turning down the timer. I just want the damned thing to work and it does so woo hoo! No repair bill for us. And the dryer should last years now. I'm glad because I have all the old bed sheets and pillows to wash.

We need to get more light blubs too. All the ones in the comptuer room burnt out and I'm typing in darkness. I hate that. I like lots of light.

I finally sent out nearly all my packages and cards. Only a hand full of local ones left and two for Australia still.

I can't wait for Spring. I'm really looking forward to placing some seed orders and perhaps some plant orders too. Catalogs are coming in the mail and it gets me so excited. I got one for Murry McMurry hatchery. I wish I could have baby chicks again. But 8 girls is a big flock and a lot to take care of just for the two of us.

Its getting cold again here too. It's 34 degrees here right now.
My Mum's nepenthes seem to be cold. They're all dying back.
I replaced a lightbulb in the study the other day. That light has three bulbs and is nice and bright.
Sadly the only catalogs I get are boring ones.

Oh yuck. That sucks. I feel for ya.
It's normal for them to drop pitchers in the winter because of less light and shorter days. If you have a south facing window that's the best for them. They'll produce leaves but not pitchers.

Our lights are fans and most have three or four blubs. But I can never seen to keep all of them on. One's always burned out. But now all of them are out which is bad.

There's got to be a catalog for something you're interested in. I should make a video of the catalogs I get and the seeds I just cleaned out. Threw out anything that was 2008 and older.

It was supposed to be 45 here today, but it felt colder than that. I went to the gym all morning, and since I took a water class, I was cold for quite a while after I got home.

I need to get all the pine needles out of my garden. I don't usually plant until March or April, but I am not looking forward to clearing out my garden.

It's 41 outside right now. Not good.

The one good thing about this cold is it kills everything and makes winter clean up easier. I need to take advantage of that and start doing some stuff once it warms up again.

I got the McMurray catalog, too, and I know what you mean about wishing you could order. While I was looking through it I kept thinking what a shame it was that I couldn't get more birds, but I really don't have a good place to raise the babies indoors at present. But baby chickens and ducks are so cute!

That's ridiculous about the $35 shipping on the plant. What are they doing to it in order to make it so expensive? I can see high shipping costs for live animals, but a small plant? That doesn't make sense.

This year's catalog is beautiful. Chris and I had fun looking at it. I want to get those colored wood eggs and some of those corner nests. I think Henrietta might like that one indoors instead of sitting on that box. She's miss priss. It's too bad McMurry and most companies have a minimum order of 25 chicks. That's just too much for most backyards. I'd have to work out something with a friend if I did that and he'd have to take the majority as I'd only want to keep 3-4 and that's really pushing my flock already. Nope, best to not do that for now.

Yeah, that's what I paid when I ordered my chickens and for live animals I do think that's reasonable since they have to arrive in 2 days. But a tiny 4" pot plant is NOT worth $35 shipping. I know there are people that can throw their money away like that but I'm not one of them. Heck even if I were rich that would be rediculous. They are an orchid place so most of their plants have crazy prices on top the the insane shipping. I don't get it. I did make a great find I'll post about later tonight.

Haha, you and Gyro will both be a menace to weeds from now on with your pruners :)

That's great that you got some new sheets for your bed, too. Has Chris noticed yet?

Sorry about the cold. I'd hate it, too. It's interesting that some Nepenthes are highland plants and that cold and humidity can sometimes go together.

That sucks about the light bulbs. They don't seem to last as long as they used to (though that could be an illusion as I'm getting older).
