Bluebirds and Sorath's planets
I'm excited and really hoping that a pair of bluebirds will move into my nestbox finally. Remember last year back in late March I saw a male bluebird on the wire. I painted up my pretty nestbox and put it out in April but it was too late and he was gone. I missed my chance to have bluebirds for the year. But I put the box up anyway for this year. When I went to get the mail today I saw a pair on the fence next to the box. They got nervous and scared when they saw me, so I made a wide path around the palm tree to not scare them off. I went back in and got my cameras. I got some video footage and I got some nice pictures too.

Here the female is flying to the entrance hole. I'm so lucky I got some flying shots. The rest behind the cut. Also some pics of Sorath with planets in Skyrim.

The male is landing.

Peeping down from the roof. Won't say too much else on some of these since they speak for themselves.

The female is so drab. She doesn't look happy.

Fanned tail

I hadn't realized his tail was fanned til I looked at this on the computer.

Blurry but it's a flying shot. I'm glad. They never went in and at first I thought the hole might be too small. I measured it and it was 1.5 inches so it was right. When I opened it there was a wasp nest inside. I knocked it down and only one wasp came out. It wasn't the hole. Oh man. I hope they come back tomorrow and try again. I really would love for them to move in. It's clean now. No mean bugs inside. I missed them last year. I don't want to miss them this year. I hope this means Spring is right around the corner. I'm done with winter.

And now Sorath.

Sorath with planets - Skyrim

Isn't this cool? He's almost complete. These little balls come out in a cave called Yngol Barrow. They start to follow you but don't hurt you or do anything. I LOVED it because they were easy to imagine they were his planets.

Over head view of Sorath with planets - Skyrim

This overhead view is lovely. I wish I could have kept them to use as a shield the way Sorath really uses his planet. By the end of this dungeon I had 8. Sorath has 10. So close!

So that's it for now. This month has been great bird wise. I hope it keeps up.

What a fantastic set of bluebird pictures! I had to smile at each one. That was so neat; it felt like the story was unfolding right in front of me. I hope they come back, too.

Thanks. I was so happy to see them not on the wires and closer to me. And it's right outside my computer room window where I spend the most time. So I got to enjoy them while I worked on my art. I hope they do decide to take up residence.

Those pictures are so cute, especially the close up and the one where she is looking at the camera. The flight shots are good too. I love that the wings aren't blurry on your flight shots.

We moved our bluebird box to a pole. Stuff kept killing the nuthatches that used it last year.

Thanks. I think there are two where she's looking forward like that, but you have to click to make it full sized to see it. Yeah, I have my shutter speed set to high. I need to increase it but don't remember how. I don't like pics that are blurry on purpose to be artsy. I want everything frozen and clear. In those water photos I prefer to see each drop than to see everything like a white painting.

Yeah, I remember how frustrating that was.

The only flight shots I have are of Rudy, and they are blurry since I don't think the camera mom used has a fast enough shutter speed even on sport setting.

You are so lucky to have had such a good bird day yesterday. First screech owls the night before and then bluebirds.

This is so exciting!!! What a thrill to have them come and nest in your bird house in your own yard! You are so lucky! They are beautiful birds, lovely colors on their breast. I don't think I've ever seen one in our yard, but have seen them out in nature and the preserves around here. Are these also called Eastern Bluebirds? Now I'm getting the urge to have a birdhouse, too.

You got great pictures!

They aren't nesting, just checking it out. That's what I'm worried about and hope that they'll come back now that I removed the wasp nest. I hope they do decide to move in. Yes they are Eastern Bluebirds. They are the only kind of bluebird we have out here so I just say "bluebirds". If you have an open grassy area you might be able to attract them. I'd go for it.

Thanks. You should see yesterday's post of the Screech Owl. You can hear me "talking" to him and getting him to sing in the video.

Oh, but they look pretty interested! I'll keep my fingers crossed that they come back. I'll have to check out birdhouses and be sure the entry hole is 1 1/2 inches in diameter. So they like wide open spaces, not in among trees? Our back yard beyond the gravel is all open.

I have been so busy lately and I am so far behind again with my LJ. Today, I'm planning on taking some time to catch up here and also make a post about what's been happening.

Desthagirion on January 11th, 2012 06:07 pm (UTC)
Yes they were very interested. I hope they'll give it a second chance. Birds are very unforgiving if you mess up with them. Having a wasp nest in there was not something they were happy about. I got my nestbox at Lowe's. They're like $10 and already made to the right dimensions. Yes they like fields and meadows edged by woods. So I think your open yard would be a good place to set up a box. They like the nests about 4-5 feet off the ground on a pole. The reason the hole shouldn't be too big is because you want it to be big enough for blue birds but too small for Starling which steal nests and kill bluebirds.

I look forward to that. I'll look for your post and other responses. BTW, did you get my card?

Thanks for all the info about the bird houses.
No, I didn't get your card, but the mail has not come yet today. It is usually here by 5:00. Looking forward to it. I'll let you know.

The bluebirds are so pretty!
I like the blue on the pics of Sorath too, it looks like a magical atmosphere.

Yeah, I just love bluebirds. I hope this will be the year I get some to stick around.
It was a neat place. Yes it was definitely magical. I had to fight a ghost at the end.

The bluebirds pictures are great! That's cool that you got the shot of the tail fanned.
Desthagirion on January 12th, 2012 07:37 pm (UTC)
THanks. Yeah I was so happy to have gotten some of these difficult shots.

Oh, that's cool that they checked out your 'residence'. A pity about the wasp nest, though :(
