LJ is now resizing images. Stop changing stuff
This is a test post and an example to those idiots running LJ. I posted this over on news where everyone is upset about the changes to comments. They FINALLY fixed the word wrap problem on Flexible Squares but did not fix the image problem I have brought up several times. Before they messed up Flexible Squares images that were huge would spill outside the tables. This was good. People should be able to post giant photos if they want so long as it's behind a cut. Before they were getting cut off when the word wrap got messed up. Now they are being resized which is even worse. Do no resize them. I want to post a big pic on my journal that's my right. I don't want "improvments" on a system that was working fine. LJ used to be the best, but it's quickly going down hill. It just sucks that despite what they are doing they are still the best. I hate Dreamwidth so I refuse to go there, but I will keep looking for sites that are comprable and if I find any I will let you guys know.

So here's the example behind the cut. This picture is 3648x2736. This one should try even high resolution monitors. I'm on a square monitor with my resolution set to 1028x768. Instead of spilling out to the right this pic is squashed tall ways into my boxes. I do not want this. The html has the image size for height and width. LJ should not over ride my html. I have to take into consideration what others might see. When you guys post big pics keep this in mind. Let me know what you see when you go behind the cut.

Orange shaped soap dispenser

Also the preview button used to be a button. Now it's a link that's almost un-noticeable.

EDIT: 6/16/12 LJ hasn't fixed this. Instead of the whole imaged forced into a box to be tall it's just cuts off the right side. I don't know if that's better or worse but it's still unacceptable. They need to make it like it was before. Just let it spill out over the boxes.

The picture is squished so the soap dispenser is tall and skinny. My resolution is the same as yours.
Des: Thagirion Moltenthagirion on December 21st, 2011 02:51 pm (UTC)
Yeah that's what I see too. I don't post pics bigger than 640 but for my friends that do I don't want to see them all squashed.
Tilly: crystal ballxyndarella on December 21st, 2011 02:42 pm (UTC)
Tumblr is pretty nice for posting pictures at whatever size you like. You should give them a look as a potential blog since you can post in a variety of ways there but there's a lack of communities there too.

The image looks resized to me and it's a very bad resize indeed. They shouldn't force you to do things and it was never broken to begin with, like you said.

When I make posts, my preview button is still a button. It's right next to the post button. Is this was you're referring to?
Des: Thagirion Blazingthagirion on December 21st, 2011 02:54 pm (UTC)
I looked at a friend's tumblr for the first time yesterday and hated it. Looks like a cheap web page and I could make my own on my website better. Perhaps that's something I should consider though I won't be able to have people respond which would suck. After LJ I think blogger is the best but I hate they don't have a proper friend's page, multiple user icons, icons that show up in comments, more customizable themes, mood themes and communities. And it's not easy to navigate. If they fixed these thing I might move to them.

I first noticed this because some of my friends post big pics and they were tall and skinny too. Looked horrible.

Yes that's what I meant. Mine was just a link.
Tilly: red hair: head in handsxyndarella on December 21st, 2011 03:38 pm (UTC)
I like Tumblr because it allows me to share random things I like that would otherwise clutter up my LJ. I can share artworks I come across and things like that which I don't always want on my LJ. I guess it's just a different medium for me. Have you considered a Wordpress type blog at all? While I temporarily had one through my domain, I found it to be extremely customisable on looks and allowed comments but again, that lacks things like icons, mood themes and communities.

Oh my god, they took away my preview button! I just checked and it's gone on mine now too. Why on earth would they replace a button with a link? It's pointless and changing one tiny element on the posting page isn't going to improve the site in any way.

I really hope they get a lot of complaints and just change stuff back. Why fix it if it ain't broke?
Desthagirion on December 21st, 2011 04:31 pm (UTC)
I've seen those word press ones but not being on a unified server I don't know if anyone can post. I don't know since I like having registered users only and it's not something you sign up for, my commenters that is. Yeah there just isn't enough info for me and or features I need like here.

There's a lot of complaining going on. There always is but now that we have ruskie overlords they don't care and won't listen.
earthmother45earthmother45 on December 21st, 2011 04:10 pm (UTC)
I've got a tall and skinny image for your soap dispenser.

I noticed my preview button was gone over a month ago. That frustrated me so much because I always preview my posts several times as I'm putting them together! This was when we were having the latest set of problems with LJ, so I kept hoping it would reappear, but it never did. Quite by accident, when I did a spell check once, the preview box suddenly appeared right where it had always been. I was so happy! But then, when I went to make a post the next time, it wasn't there. So now, when I want to preview, I have to do spell check first each time to get my preview box.

I see where you said it it now a link that is unnoticeable. Where in the heck is the link? They must have hidden it pretty well. That is so odd that some still have their preview boxes and some don't. I'm usually a very patient and low-keyed person, but even this is getting to me lately.
Des: Thagirion Moltenthagirion on December 21st, 2011 04:38 pm (UTC)
I'm the same way. I don't use lots of features that most people are complaining about but now they're starting to intrude on everyone by changing stuff that we had chosen to have the way we like. Some of the big pics you posted a squished like mine is.

I always make my post in the HTML tab. I circled the preview link that used to be a button. HERE.

earthmother45earthmother45 on December 21st, 2011 05:36 pm (UTC)
You're not going to believe this . . . oh, well, maybe will with all that's going on with LJ :), but right after I wrote my comment above to you, I went to my LJ to post something and there in plain sight was the preview button right were it used to be months ago, only now in blue ink! just like you circled! (Thanks for doing that.) I guess the complaining we do must eventually reach someone's ears and do some good.
Desthagirion on December 21st, 2011 05:45 pm (UTC)
Oh good, I'm glad you were able to find it and can use that again. I like to preview too.
Cheezey: Bushroot is not amusedcheezey on December 22nd, 2011 05:11 pm (UTC)
That is an annoying change! I don't notice this because I use Semagic to post almost all of my posts, but that's a bad change. People need to be able to preview easily.
sike_saner on December 21st, 2011 07:37 pm (UTC)
I see a soap dispenser that looks like someone's been pulling on the top and bottom of it like taffy. Same screen resolution and monitor shape as yours.

Des: Owen Painedthagirion on December 21st, 2011 07:42 pm (UTC)
Yeah I think everyone will see that. LJ need to fix this.
elkdawn: tigerelkdawn on December 21st, 2011 07:48 pm (UTC)
I was unaware that all this was going on. Ugh!

The image resize result is the same on my end: tall, skinny, quite squished looking.

I'm heading over to the news community to read up and put in my two-cents. Actually, it's more than two-cents because I have a paid account. :|
Des: Don't Taunt the Tigerthagirion on December 21st, 2011 08:57 pm (UTC)
Yes, please have at them. The more people that complain the better.
The Silver Wolf of Darkness: Do Not Wantsilvolf on December 21st, 2011 11:30 pm (UTC)
I HATE what they're doing. I loved LJ why do they have to mess it up after years of keeping it the same?
I have a journal here http://silvolf.insanejournal.com/ which is similar to LJ. I think there is a place called DeadJournal as well which is like LiveJournal. Or there used to be.

Oh and the photo is still squashed and I have a widescreen monitor.

Insanejournal and Deadjournal both used the same coding that Livejournal is based off. Dreamwidth also uses LJ coding for a base but I think they are gradually moving into all the stuff that LJ would never implement.

I remember IJ and DJ being really popular back in the day as alternative blogging sites. I'd be surprised if they aren't still around.
The Silver Wolf of Darkness: Chisilvolf on December 22nd, 2011 09:11 am (UTC)
Yeah I thought so, so hopefully they won't get these awful "improvements" that LJ has been implementing.
Des: Owen Painedthagirion on December 22nd, 2011 01:33 pm (UTC)
I'll have to check those out. I just saw that deadjournal is still around. But I think they're on a very old livejournal system. I don't know if these two sites have Flexible Squares which is the only layout I want.

I hate Dreamwidth. I went there yesterday and was instantly pissed. I couldn't see any posts in my friends lists because they say they only display posts from the last 14 days. If no one is active that means and empty page. I want to see posts no matter how old they are. This is a new thing LJ got that they've adopted that's bad. I noticed LJ doing this too and it pisses me off because when I view my communities there are hardly any posts and even recent stuff drops off the page. Same when I just view journals. I want to keep going back through pages forever so long as there are posts and not hunt down the individual communities and journals no matter how old they are. I'll make a rant about them later.

This is how your photos look too. Please try to keep in mind what your friends will see when you post a big pic.
The Silver Wolf of Darkness: Ignignoktsilvolf on December 22nd, 2011 01:39 pm (UTC)
I hate that. It means you have to constantly check the page and what if you go away on vacation for a bit? Then you see no posts. And I agree, I like being able to go back as far as I like too. It's useful.

Luckily I don't often post big pics and I tend to put them behind cuts anyway. I've wanted to do a smaller thumbnail thing and then you click on it and it makes it big (without doing a separate thumbnail image) but I don't know how to do that so I need to find time to go and look it up. I've been posting less and less in LJ and some of my other friends have too.
Desthagirion on December 22nd, 2011 01:52 pm (UTC)
I'm glad you agree.
That's what I do. I like keeping things under 640 wide. To post a thumb nail I do this code
< a href="image url here">< img src="image url here" width="640"></a>

Take out the space between the < and the A and the space between the < and the img. It's the width that resizes it to fit your layout and the link that people can click to see the full sized image. I always do this with my drawings and why you see me add "Click for full size".

That's too bad, but I'm gald you still comment. That's very important to me.
The Silver Wolf of Darkness: Pietrosilvolf on December 22nd, 2011 03:24 pm (UTC)
Thanks for that! I'll try it out next time I post a picture.

I still comment but on the communities choosing an icon is a pain now.
Des: Embarassed Gadzooksthagirion on December 22nd, 2011 03:49 pm (UTC)
I'm worried now. I read what one of Suzi's friends said and it seems like they're going to force that even on our custom journals.
kabuldurkabuldur on December 22nd, 2011 10:34 am (UTC)
Your soap dispenser pic looks good to me. Very big and a bit grainy, but not squished. I hope it stays that way!

Re: the preview button, it was missing for a couple of days, back for one day and gone again! I don't always use it, but it is handy at times. I wish they'd bring it back, too.
Desthagirion on December 22nd, 2011 01:35 pm (UTC)
Grainy is how my photos come out at full size. But yeah that's the problem that LJ won't let it load full size. It's keeping it within the boxes when it needs to spill out.
Cheezey: Blow My Horncheezey on December 22nd, 2011 05:09 pm (UTC)
Your orange is stretched out funny on my screen, too. It's a shame that LJ is forcing a resize like that. I hate it when proportions of pictures get skewed.

My resolution is 1920x1200.
Des: Owen Painedthagirion on December 22nd, 2011 05:55 pm (UTC)
I figured this would look bad even on larger screens like yours. I know it drives me nuts especially on TV and youtube when people upload wide screen to full screen and the other way around and either everything looks tall and skinny or short and fat. Don't they notice these things? How can they be so blind?
