Chicken and snake problems
Henrietta has been a very naughty girl lately. She's literally been jumping over the fence and going into the gutter in the front yard everyday. This is bad because it's close to the road and I really worry now about losing her and her getting run over. The fence is only four feet tall chainlink. I hated to do this but I clipped one of her wings. This hasn't stopped her and she still gets out though not as much. I don't know what to do about it. I don't want to lock her up on the patio either because she's the loudest hen and hates being locked up. She'll scream really loud until she's let out and I don't want the neighbors to get mad about a loud chicken. She's quiet when she free. I'm thinking of clipping her other wing though I'm sure it won't help since she's probably just using her legs to jump and not her wings. None of my other hens do this. It would be my favorite one. Another thing she's doing that's cute and annoying is not using the nests anymore and only wanting to lay her eggs inside. She comes to the sliding glass door and screams to be let in. I let her in the other day and she went all over the living room looking for a place. I remember that time she got on the couch so I just made a little make shift nest for her out of towels and put them on one of my tupperware storage boxes. She loved that and well now she's spoiled and demands to be let into her custom indoor nest. Sigh. I've been calling her "Her Majesty" because of this. At least she's quiet for an hour when she gets on this nest, but she needs to use the normal ones like everyone else. This chicken is driving me nuts.

The other night there was a night fright with the cockatiels. I forgot to close the patio door that night. Chris went to check and the one time I forget a corn snake took advantage to sneak in and try to eat my birds again. So he caught it and put it in a bag on the front patio. We just now released it somewhere else today. I was glad to be rid of that snake. Then he got a late call and I went with him. On the way back I mentioned I really wanted to get home because I was worried a snake would get in since the patio was still open. As soon as I get home I saw a snake on the patio. WTF?! A corn snake again, but a different one because it was longer, skinnier and a different color. More grey. Damn it! I just got rid of a snake and now I have another one. Just how the Hell many corn snakes are on my property? I like snakes but I don't want any corn snakes near my house because of my birds. I never see this many black racers which are fine since they leave the birds be. It's a shame because I like corn snakes and they are actually good pets. I had considered one as my first pet but passed it up for this reason and got my ball python instead. Darn snakes.

Tomorrow is a day off and I'm really looking forward to it. We're going to go to the flea market and hopefully pick up a used sauce pan. I'm going to be making more media for tissue culture and once I get into using hormones I need a pan that isn't used for cooking. I tried to do some TC with regular seeds today but it didn't go very well. I made a bunch of mistakes but know better now what to do when I try again.

But I was told that someone at the flea market sells tropical plants and they have pitcher plants. I'm hoping this means Nepenthes or Sarracenias. It would be great if they carried some big Nepenthes there. That's what I hope to find.

Oh and about two days ago or so I found my first hornworm caterpillars. I brought them in to raise them. Moth season has started and I get to grow bugs again this year. I won an acution today for Pink Showy Primerose. I wanted this plant because they are the host for the White Lines Sphinx and would love to raise those again.

Maybe a higher fence would work? At least you're keeping her occupied with the indoor nest though lol! Chickens appear to be able to jump pretty high.

We have an infestation of flies now for some random reason. I'm glad we don't have snakes here like you do. I held a corn snake once, when I did work experience at the Wildlife park.

Hope you have a nice day today and good luck with the caterpillars!

Yeah, I'm thinking of maybe rigging some kind of net over the regular fence. Yes they can jump very high without using their wings.

I hate that. Usually something had maggots in it we weren't aware of. It happened once with a pumpkin that was in the house. Oh man.

That's good. Snakes can be a blessing or a curse.

It's been an up and down day but over all it was good. Caterpillars are doing well. Will post about that soon.

I don't know what to do about Henrietta that would not look untidy. Gyro suggested getting some outriggers from an electric fence (NB: I am NOT suggesting that you use an electric fence!) and having them pointing inwards at an angle and stringing white plastic tape (ribbon) between. He reckons that chooks don't like that. He also suggests getting some 1 ft wide netting and putting it floppily along the top of the fence, but once again, it would look mighty untidy. I wonder if some birds of prey eg kites or something hung up along the fence would work? That is cute that Henrietta is laying in your house. I once heard of someone's pet chook jumping in the window every day and laying an egg on her pillow!

I think your chooks and birds would just attract snakes. We had that problem with guinea pigs.

Have a great day off and I hope you find all the things you need at the flea market. Your turn to go and look for treasures! They sure are enjoyable times.

Oh, and that's exciting news about the caterpillars. I hope to see footage of their progress! Awesome that you have bought a host plant, too.

Hum, that actually sounds like a good idea. I need to look into how much they cost. Perhaps she won't jump if I do that. Will also make it odd and intersting for growing my gourds and things with that. Tell him thank you. Because the fence has a pole she can jump on it, but they won't jump over a flimsy wire or net fence of the same hight. It's the same idea.

I've had birds since I was a kid and this has never been a problem. But I've never had chickens before so the screen door was always closed and I didn't forget to close it or close it late. So snakes rarely got on the patio to bother my birds in other places I've lived. I'm trying to work a new system out where the chickens won't come onto the patio anymore. They won't like it but it's better for my small birds and plants if they don't.

It was a fairly good day. I'll post about it soon.

I'll share that too. I'm having fun with this year's batch.

I'll tell Gyro you said thankyou and good luck with the fence!

For some reason guinea pigs really attract pythons! I read about your plans for the chooks - solving problems. Sounds good.

Yeah, I read about your day - good except for the chook!

I saw your biggest caterpillar. Awesome! I love those ones :)

Sounds like Miss Henrietta is definitely queen there! I wouldn't have a clue what to do about her antics, but Kabuldur and Gyro have some good ideas to try.

And the corn snakes . . . it seems they are really drawn to birds.

Growing bugs and raising the caterpillars . . . I'm looking forward to seeing and hearing about all that.

Yeah I think they have good ideas for the fence. Henrietta has been extremely bad lately. I was very mad at her today. I'll post about that.

Yeah it's a shame. I like corn snakes. I just wish they ate mice like other snakes do.

You're going to like the set of pics I've made so far on Flickr.

Hahaha, you've spoiled your chicken! That's both funny and frustrating. I am sorry to hear she's getting out, though. I hope you figure out a way to keep her in for good. They can be great escape artists. Sorry to hear about your snake issues, too. I hope your birds stay safe.
Des: Henriettathagirion on July 11th, 2011 01:17 am (UTC)
Yeah she's spoiled. Sometimes I wonder who's really in charge. Seems she's got me trained on some things.
She's been very naughty. I'll try to figure something out short of locking her in the old aviary.
The snakes are just annoying.
rhodielady_47 on July 10th, 2011 02:40 pm (UTC)
I'm curious. Do you mean the pink evening primrose when you say "Pink Showy Primerose" or is this a totally different plant?
I don't know why certain flowering plants are so hard to find. Sometimes it seems like the easiest to grow and flower are the hardest to find!
I'm looking forward to your pictures of your forays into tissue culturing.
:)

Des: Birdhouse Gourdsthagirion on July 11th, 2011 01:19 am (UTC)
Yes I mean pink evening primrose. Oenothera speciosa. They aren't common down here or I've never seen them.
Do you even read all my posts? I posted a lot about it already.
rhodielady_47 on July 11th, 2011 06:21 am (UTC)
I've missed some here lately, sorry.
BTW: I think the flower should do well for you but let me warn you that it can be a somewhat agressive grower.

PESKY SNAKES & CHICKENS!! lol. They have been keeping us on our toes, huh?

So far, I am really enjoying our day off! :)
Des: Cope Thumbs Upthagirion on July 11th, 2011 01:20 am (UTC)
Yes they are. Big time. Quite annoying.
Over all it was a very good day.

Hi there, i just wanted to say thank you for the v-gift and b-day message and to wish you a happy (early) birthday as well, since i won't have internet access until probably sometime next month. I haven't had it for over a week as i've been out of town and now i'll be moving and won't even have my computer available to me. Right now i'm on a neighbor's very unstable wifi connection that i could lose at any moment, so i just haven't had a chance to catch up, but after the move and i get my own internet connection things should finally start getting back to normal.

I hope those snakes stop trying to terrorize your birds!
Des: Happy Birthdaythagirion on July 11th, 2011 01:21 am (UTC)
No prob. Glad to send it your way. Thanks. I'm really looking forward to it. I hope I get lots of neat stuff. That sucks about no internet. Hopefully you'll have access soon.

Yes, the snakes need to go somewhere else.
sike_saner on July 10th, 2011 11:38 pm (UTC)
Ack, glad you guys caught those snakes. Hopefully you won't be seeing any more of them around for at least a good long while.
Des: Cottonmouththagirion on July 11th, 2011 01:22 am (UTC)
Yeah, I'm getting tired of the snakes really. They need to go away. On the bright side we haven't had toilet frogs in forever. I think we can thank the chickens for that.
kabuldurkabuldur on July 11th, 2011 11:06 am (UTC)
Toilet frogs, lol. I love em! Haven't seen any in quite a while :)
