Chickens not eating
It's going to be cold tonight. It's going to drop into the 40's. I'm not happy about it. I have all the budgies in the house. I'm not happy about that either.

Ok questions for those of you that have chickens. I'm a bit worried about my girls. They get layer pellets and scratch. I used to fill the bowls and they would eat it all up. But lately they haven't been touching it or their water. They have free run of the yard, but I find it hard to believe they're finding enough food out there on their own. They act normal other wise. They are happy, clucky, they sand bathe, they run and they lay eggs. But when I pick them up their breasts are too skinny and the bowls aren't getting emptied like they used to be even water. Now that winter is here I thought they'd need to eat more not less. I don't want the food to go to waste, but I'm worried they're not eating enough anymore. Has anyone had this happen? I've never met a bird that wasn't a glutton.

So it's Dec 1st. It's officially winter now. Yeay! Though I'm sad to see all the Fall stuff go. I still need to put away the bathroom carpet and a few plastic pumpkins. I put up some Christmas window clings. Soon I'll put the tree up once I make room and clean the floor. I'm behind on that. Speaking of getting behind, you guys are making me feel guilty about having bought cards and gifts and are done. I haven't done ANYTHING and I don't even have any ideas for what to draw yet. It's starting to stress me out. I'm sort of gettting an idea for doing something with Sorath but I'm not sure yet.

I had to go through my older art on deviant today and found out much to my annoyance that some of my older drawings had been reset to allow downloads. That pissed me off. So I had to go through ALL my galleries and set them to NO downloads. If people are going to save my art they're going to have to do some work and do it the old way. So if you guys have that feature turned off check your older stuff as they were sneaky to not change it on the first page but pages after that were set back. Jerks. And what's with this whole llama thing? Yeah I've been away that long. Seems pointless really. I guess it's like the virtual gifts here. I refuse to pay real money for them, but I will use the free ones they offer. So I will give some out to my friends. Had to figure out how.

Maybe it's because its colder? Although that usually makes animals eat more.
I'm glad I posted your gift out, I'm running out of money now and I have two more gifts to post overseas. I'm really gunna have to scrape together. That's the last time I buy everyone things that cost more. For a lot of my friends I make things and its cheaper, while they get something unique and creative. I don't regret getting your gift though, I think you'll love it! Apparently they aren't making them anymore.
I hate the download thing too. When I post things I always turn that off. The llama thing started April 1st and is just a fun way of giving people a little badge that's free. All the others you have to pay for either in points or money.

Yeah that's what has me confused. You'd think with the cold they'd need more food to stay fat and warm. I don't know what's going on.

I appreciate you spent money on me and I'm already grateful even though I haven't seen it yet. BTW, I've loved all the gifts you've given me. Just want to make that clear. I know sometimes I come off a bit unemotional, but they are there just buried deep within. Like the last one was the drawing of Sorath. Of course I liked that a lot. And the little Cope you made me. he's always on my desk... and the cute budgie broach.

Yes, how sneaky of them to turn it on behind our backs. My fan art account has over 100 images so it was so boring going through and editing everything. I'll give you and the others some with my other account then. It's kinda neat they level up.

Yes, I know you're grateful for the gifts. All my friends are and that's why I never mind spending a bit out when I see something I know someone will like. Only this year I didn't plan it so well. I had the expense of my new monitor to take into account and I foolishly forgot it.

If I made more I wouldn't think twice about getting my friends good gifts. I'd still like to get you an xbox or a ps3 one day. Heck xboxes for a few of my friends on here.
The Silver Wolf of Darkness: Macawsilvolf on December 2nd, 2010 10:46 am (UTC)
Do you need wireless internet for the Xbox? Cos I don't have that.
Desthagirion on December 2nd, 2010 01:19 pm (UTC)
Nope. We have ours plugged into the ethernet. PS3 does both.
The Silver Wolf of Darknesssilvolf on December 2nd, 2010 01:55 pm (UTC)
That's very useful. Actually Chris has an Xbox so I could play with him too.
Desthagirion on December 2nd, 2010 02:23 pm (UTC)
That's cool. I don't know of too many good games that are two player though, but it's fun to watch each other play. That's what we do. That would be cool if he had one of the Fallout Games. Do you know if games are by region like movies? That would suck if they were.
The Silver Wolf of Darknesssilvolf on December 2nd, 2010 04:52 pm (UTC)
Yes, sadly they are regional. I think regions are dumb.

Darn it. Yeah, I hate the whole notion of regions too. Totally sucks.

I haven't noticed my birds eating that much less, but sometimes they do go through phases where they get skinny. It might have something to do with the seasonal lack of light. My hens have all stopped laying for the most part because of it, aside from the youngest ones that are less than a year old. Perhaps their metabolisms just slow down this time of year and they don't need as much. That would be my guess if they seem otherwise healthy.

Like I told Silvolf above it doesn't make since since most animal need to put on weight for winter, but may-be this is normal. I guess I shouldn't worry too much since nothing else has really changed and they're going about life as normal. They're quite too except when they've laid an egg.

My chickens always are about the same amount, but they didn't have the run of the yard. Usually they stop laying some time in the autumn, and their combs aren't so bright red. They perk up again the next spring, their combs get redder and they start laying again. Mine have sometimes started laying as early as June or earlier. Some time during the autumn they usually moult. They seem to take turns doing that.

So, no answers for you. You would think they would get fat, not skinny, so as to keep warm. Did they moult this year? It seems odd, too that they are still laying. Maybe it's the season.

The only other thing I can think of is that they like fresh food better :) I'm a bit hesitant about layer pellets. You just don't know what's in them. They are pretty much a failure here as they crumble to nothing in the wet weather. Also, go mouldy in storage. If fed grain, though, they do need protein from somewhere and also shell grit.

Ugh, I'm sorry you have to endure those cold temperatures :(

This year I haven't done cards, either, and it's the second day of December. I'm not going to panic much; if I don't make any cards soon I will buy some. I saw some cool ones today, but they were expensive :)
Desthagirion on December 2nd, 2010 01:21 pm (UTC)
I'd rather them eat pellets because they are 100% complete. They'd get protein calcium and all the other things they need out of them. All my birds eat some sort of pellet. It's the best way to go. The only thing I can think of is to keep them locked up until they eat their food then let them out. I just can't see how they'd find enough food out there in a small yard. It's not like they have a whole country side to range on.

They haven't molted yet. I think there's going to be two more cold nights like this. Yuck.
kabuldurkabuldur on December 3rd, 2010 10:53 am (UTC)
Yeah, I know the pellets are a complete food, whereas grains are not. It depends on how much yard you have and how many chooks as to of there would be enough food in the yard.

As I said in my reply to your latest post, I remember now, my chickens I had last would not eat the grain when they had free rein over the yard. They also were skinny because they got lots of exercise. But were healthy, none-the-less, and the one that was laying still laid eggs :)

It's already been that cold here. I'm not as cold tolerant as I used to be so it really sucks.

Christmas shopping for family is done unless I find something I just have to get someone. I still need to make a card for you and one for another friend. I don't know what I'm going to do about those so I'm procrastinating on them.
Des: White Seal happy- greatfulthagirion on December 2nd, 2010 06:23 pm (UTC)
When you're thinner you're less cold tolerant. I have no desire to be cold tolerant and like being heat tolerant.

I actually thought of something on the spot and I've already drawn my card. Yeay! Now I need to ink it then color it. Let's hope I remember how to color.
